Ringer and Alerts Volume Issue - iOS 14

Since upgrading to iOS 14, the Ringer and Alerts volume is randomly turning all the way down and sometimes back up by itself. I use my phone as my alarm so it bugs me if my alarm is super quiet and I oversleep. Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes?

I have seen a lot of people commenting that they will see in the morning whether their issue is fixed. I have found a way that (at least for me) will show you whether the bug is likely to exist for you or not.

Go into your alarm list and hit 'Edit', choose an alarm and go into the 'Sound' menu. This is the list of sounds you can choose from to use to wake you up. I noticed that playing a sound and then hitting 'Back' to stop the sound triggers the bug so you should be able to work out whether the bug will affect you.

I also agree with the previous commenter who stated that the alert volume will reset to the same level as the game volume setting. That means, if you have your game volume set to minimum, the alert volume will set to minimum after playing the alarm sound. If affected by this bug, try to remember to set your game volume (the volume bar movable from the Control Centre) to where you want your alert volume to stay and this should do the job for you (I hope).

This may be helpful – I was infuriated with various changes to the alarm in iOS 14, but then found that you can use the Bedtime feature, which, strangely, has (sort of) been moved from the clock app to the Health app, but, at least after you set it for the first time, it shows at the top of the regular alarms + it can be adjusted there, so you CAN:

-set different alarms for different days

-use sounds that are only available in bedtime but not in the regular app, including Early Riser sound (the ONLY morning alarm i can tolerate)

-adjust alarm volume separate from phone volume!! This last item may solve the problem that you’re talking about here.

I have been trying something of late which helps (me, anyway). I divorce the volume buttons from alert volumes and also disable the alarm from decreasing if I'm staring at the screen. I move the alert volume slider to where I want it. Then, I put Settings into the Background. Do not fully close the application. In 2-3 days of leaving it in the background, it has not moved the volume on its own.

erin, what model phone do you have? i have an iphone 6s plus.

So, after testing more, i found some new info which you can try.

The first time the alarm goes off, it uses the ringer volume like it normally does and should.

However, when I hit a button to silence the alarm like the home button or volume button, it looks like it is changing the system volume to the volume class assigned to games for example.

Since i play my games with no volume, it adjusts the ringer volume to no volume.

If i then go into a game and change it’s volume to half way and repeat the process, the silencing of the alarm will set the system ringer volume to half way regardless what it was set to before.

Can reliably duplicate it.

The new summary for what I’m seeing is when silencing an alarm, the ringer volume is being set to the level of the volume class setting for games and associated items.

It seems like the volume class handling for alarms or the silencing code changed somewhere between ios 13 and 14.2.

For the folks in the community that said that 14.2 fixed their problem, let us know what model phone you have please.

i opened a ticket with apple about it. don’t have any news yet. they had me reset my phone and restore it which didn’t help which makes sense as others are having the problem.

Maybe 14.2 partially fixed the problem for some but it’s still a problem in older phones.

Also noticed that the animation that comes up when it’s adjusting the volume when silencing it, shows both the ringer volume animation at the top and the vertical volume bar animation on the left.

FWIW, I had the setting "Change with Buttons" which was activated (use the volume buttons to adjust ringer and alerts volume). But these buttons also can be used to take a photo in the Camera. So I'm wondering if by taking a picture by means of the volume buttons, this does not modify the volume. Anyway, I'll switch this off to see if there's an improvement...

I'm on iOS 14.4.

im Having the same problem. Keep missing calls and texts because the ringer volume drops to zero. I believe I found the problem and am testing now. I suspected it was the health sleep mode because it also enables DND. Under do not disturb there is an option for silence always or only when locked. Even when DND was off I’d often find the ringer level reset to zero. When I switched back to silence always it seems to keep the volume levels.

hello Addled_mind,

It is not the Do not Disturb mode's issue. It is however the iOS 14.0.1 and the bugs of the software. A few days ago Apple just announced the all- new iPhone 12, 12mini, 12pro and 12 pro max. I am waiting to preorder the 12 pro max on nov.6th, and in just a few days or a week, apple will soon be announcing iOS 14.1 which will help solve bugs and issues. Don't worry! just remember to not turn on the change with buttons on settings>sounds and haptics. Hope the iOS 14.1 will solve this issue! I will be letting you guys know once iOS 14.1 and if the bug is solved or not. Hopefully it is!

Hi moosycow, I don't believe anyone is saying apple will never fix the issue 😁 we're all just trying to find a work around, just as you've put forth. However your solution to not change ringer and alert volume by buttons has no effect as I've never enabled that option. So far I've disabled sleep schedule and the do not disturb - silence when phone is locked to always silent and so far the ringer volume has not been reset to zero. I've now re-enable the sleep schedule while keeping always silence enabled. Will report back if the ringer/alerts volume drops again.

Cheers!

I still have the problem on 14.2 on iphone 6s plus.

When I silence an alarm with a button, it shows an animation that it’s lowering the volume. However, it’s lowering the global/ringer volume too for everything after that when it should really just be silencing that one alarm that i told it to.

It’s bad because i need to hear alarms in the middle of the night while on call.
