Why does my iPhone screen have a red dot in iOS 14?

When you are on a call the phone app has the microphone on, so the dot will appear. So it is the Phone app that is displaying the dot. To test that, next time you are on a call tap the Mute button and watch the dot disappear.

This is all dumb more things to make the battery go faster, and probably a hidden meaning behind it. Because we have never needed this function. So why now ? They have all these features just ready when they continue to upgrade to another version.

In other words, you would rather not know if your microphone is on. Apple should get rid of the dot, so you won’t know. I get it.

What you are asking for is impossible. Your iPhone has no idea what the settings are on the other end of the call. Which is good, because it protects their privacy. And yours, when you are on the other end of a call.

In response to tour comment, how would I not know if one of those features are on? Literally let me know a reason how that could possibly happen! It’s simple to password protect so you don’t pocket dial or push buttons. You can set all your apps up so they can’t use the features. And if my camera happens to go on then what? I’ll find some funny pictures later? And how do you know they can’t tell? You would have said the same about them tracking your usage, location, siri, Alexa etc 15 years ago. None of us know what they have the ability to do.

Mr. Finch you should be awarded the "Patience of Steel" medal. I've been following this absurd thread just for some Covid-19 comic relief. Whether the light is any part of ROY G BIV or not - Move on people and get a life or a different phone.

As you apparently didn’t bother to read any of the thread you posted to, the ACCURATE reply is that the red or orange dot means that you are using the microphone. That’s all it means.

To turn off the red dot, turn off the microphone in whatever app you are using it in. There is a 1:1 relationship between the microphone being on and the red dot. Of course, if you turn off the microphone to remove the red dot it will be really hard for the person on the other end of the call to hear you unless you shout and they are in the next room.

Lawrence Finch. I know. It’s hard for me too. I just came on here because mine was an orange square yesterday and today a red dot. I was happy about it when I heard it was coming because it’s really a way to let you know another party or app is on your phone. Just trying to get used to it.

Can’t ever get a valid answer how to shut the RED dot off. Apple why don’t you tell how too? Or like another said , are you part of it. I’m saying GOODBYE to iPhoned. Your service is basically non- existent using a virus as an excuse and putting people or AI on line that know nothing. Hello Android.

If you open the Control Center it will tell you which app is or was using the microphone.

It means that your microphone is on. See ➡️ About the orange and green indicators in your iPhone status bar - Apple Support. See especially the note under the orange dot.

I have a minor bug right now, i dont have any calls right now and i dont use my microphone
