iphone 8 plus wotks but has a darken screen

i have an iPhone 8, 2 years old, and today the screen lost most of the backlight. You can just see items On the screen through the gloom! Tried a hard reboot - no go, plugged it in to the charger (even though the battery had 90% charge from an overnight charge) and the backlight showed up again. Took it off the charger and it retained the backlight for a short time then did the same thing. Any idea if the cause and possible solutions for this please?

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of why this is happening. Does this behavior happen all the time, or is it limited to certain times of day or some other potential contributing factor?
