Delayed notifications

I'm on IOS 14, and this also happened when I was on 13. The notifications on my phone are not working and are delayed by sometimes as much as 5 minutes. If someone calls me on FaceTime, it rings for them but my screen doesn't even turn on. Messages sent to me are delayed, on imessages and WhatsApp as well.

Do not disturb is off

Notifications are turned on, all settings.

Bedtime is off

Reset networks settings

Reset my phone once but restored from a cloud backup

Reset all settings

Any help will be extremely appreciated.

Howdy WillianKazuo,

It sounds like notifications aren't working as expected. We know how important it is to be able to rely on notifications. You’re in the right place to find a resolution.

It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting. You mentioned that notifications are turned on. Do you notice any changes if you adjust the notification style for any of the apps?

Here's a resource that can help:

Change notification settings on iPhone

Take care!

So uhhh... Is there a fix for this yet..?

I've been reading the replies and I see some as recent as march 2021 and I've also been having this problem since I bought my 11 pro max in feb of 2020 😅

I'm sure it's not the internet or the app because I have the exact same apps on my old android phone with the same accounts and the same internet connection and that phone never fails to ring on notifications.

And yes, I logged them all off my old phone before I realized this was a problem with the iPhone. My family members have been having this issue as well. They've been on iPhones for over 5 years now and they thought this was an isolated issue before I brought it up lol. I mean are the users not making enough noise for the devs to fix this problem? 😅

I never touched my badge settings so they are on. I’m pretty sure most people in this forum have tried resetting settings as well. Whenever I get a notification on another device like a Pc, I always wait for the iPhone to beep just to see how long it’s delayed. On a lot of instances, the notification will not pop up unless I open the app, wait a few seconds for the app to “connect to the internet” and then it updates the notifications. It doesn’t feel very good having to constantly open your apps to check for new messages. That’s what notifications are for 😅

these apps are also kept on background refresh so I don’t see the problem

If you don't touch this part, I believe the default settings are off. Mine have always been off and I am having this problem. :/

Honestly I made the switch to iPhone over a year ago and THIS is is ONLY issue that's making me carry an extra android phone with me. Apple if you're reading these for any other reason than to filter out unwanted posts, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS GOOD fix this problem T_T

I want the freedom of having the confidence to just bring one phone at a time T_T

I Think I have managed to fix this. I now get WhatsApp messages instantly, but I am still verifying.

1) Go to Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh

2) Turn everything off

3) Go back into WhatsApp. You should get a message saying that you'll get notifications faster if you turn app refresh on.

4) Go back to Step 1 and turn all off EXCEPT WhatsApp.

I am not sure if step 3 is necessary, but it's what I did.

After this, all my messages worked.

Now I do use telegram as well, and I have noticed that there is still a delay (with just WhatsApp and telegram background refresh on), but I am not sure if this is a telegram problem as their system works differently.

If anyone has this issue, please take the above steps and notify if it fixed your problem.

Thanks!

I also have this problem on iPhone 12. I have read the whole thread, there are several solutions on iOS, but they don't seem to work. In my experience this error is related to the carrier, I have this error since I made a change of plan with my mobile carrier in February of this year. I did a test, put a SIM from another carrier in my iPhone and the notifications started working without problems; then I put my SIM in another iPhone and stopped receiving notifications. There is a problem in the carrier's network that is causing the network to go to sleep. I recommend that you do the test using a SIM from another carrier. If we identify the origin of the problem, we can find a solution. Please take that test and comment your results.

I will do right now is to call my carrier to notify the erorr.

so Glad you mentioned “phantom notifcations” I have experiencing this since about October time last year with phantom fb messenger sounds and phantom default text sound called “note” which isnt even my chosen text tone. It is however my and most people’s WhatsApp tone. But when checked no message or notifications to follow the noise being heard. Wasn’t sure if ios 14 issue or what’sapp or fb or Apple in general :/ people think I’m paranoid because I’m like that wasn’t my phone because my screen is black . So it’s not even just when my phone is open and unlocked.

When the iPhone is blocked after a few minutes, it begins to use the mobile data and not the Wi-Fi (I investigated it in many web sites).

The technology area of my carrier told me that it is a known error, they made some configurations on their servers but I still have the same error. However, as I indicated, when I put a SIM from another carrier, the notifications work without problems.

Do you also have an Apple Watch? Check out - Official Apple Support Article HT204791 (for example: support[dot]apple[dot]com/en-us/HT204791).

That Official Apple article clearly states, "Notifications go to either your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both." and that, "If your iPhone is unlocked, you'll get notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch." - and furthermore, "If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you'll get notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked with your passcode."

I have reproduced this behavior with iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.6 and Apple Watch 6 running watchOS 7.5..

I will take a wild guess that your iPhone is trying to send the iMessages and/or other Notification to your paired Apple Watch, but eventually gives up (times out) and finally gives you the Notification on your iPhone.

I urge you to file a complaint or at least submit feedback with Apple to allow DUAL-NOTIFICATIONS on both the Watch AND the iPhone for iMessages simultaneously, and hopefully with enough complaints they will add this obviously highly desired behavior of NO DELAYS if the WATCH it out of range or otherwise just to make sure you get the text message.

I hope it really is the watch or no dual notifications thing, too. But I use a Samsung smart watch and I get notifications at the same time between them. so if my notifications are delayed on the phone, they are delayed on the watch as well. I also don't think this is what's causing it because one time I reformatted my phone and did not pair it to the watch for a few days to make sure it wasn't it, and I was still getting delayed notifs. I kinda got used to needing two phones but my android phone has REALLY bad battery life and dies before half the day is done. carrying two phones AND a power bank is not something I wanna have to do 😅. Honestly the ONE thing that's keeping this from being my only phone 😅

Do you have an airpods pro? I'm not so sure, and still observing, but can you try removing your airpods by clicking "forget device" on the Bluetooth section. Also, hard reset your airpods by holding the button on the case for 15 seconds and reconnect. I'm still observing and kind of skeptical of it, but I wish this is the cause of this issue 😪😥

Did you ever find an answer? I am having the same issues with delayed notifications or none at all. I have an iPad (7th gen), iphone 10, iphone 12.

Notifications have never worked on my 12 or ipad but they worked on my 10. I use both phones all of the time for different things, I typically have them both and it never really bothered me. Mostly laughable that my 10 would get instant notifications and my 12 would not get them or get them hours later. I also occasionally get notifications spam. 50 email notifications all at once. Sometimes when I open the actual apps - it works most of the time it doesn't.

I made the mistake of up restoring my 10 and since notifications do not work.

Both phone were originally on sprint sim cards- 12 has been updated to tmobile.

Ipad is wifi only.

Everything has been done- resets, restores, carrier settings, individually turning notifications off restarting, turning back on. DND/battery, deleting/redownloading enabling push from app.

Every once and while it annoys me enough to where I scour the forums hoping someone has fixed but at this point, nothing has worked.

Today, I got an apple pay notification at 230pm est. This transaction occurred on Wednesday at 830am est.

I finally called Apple, at the very least, theirs shouldn't be delayed. Honestly, Apple people were great, suggested that I erase my ipad and start over with a new appleid. I did and the problem persists. 3 devices, 2 differnt OS and 2 differnt appleIDs have the issue. Gentleman said he was baffled. Anything I missed? Anything else I can do?

Now that my 10 doesn't give prompt notifications...I'm hating this.
