Apple TV 3rd gen YouTube freezes when pausing video
After an update YouTube freezes when I pause video. The menu doesn't pop up and I need to restart the app every time.
I did reset the device and it didn’t help.

non of these linked worked. However, hope this helps others.
download 8.4.3 via or apple tv 3
https://ipsw.me/download/AppleTV3,2/12H885
run itunes
Disconnect the HDMI cable from Apple TV box
connect micro usb cable to apple tv box
connect micro usb cable other end to computee
connect the power cable (230Vac UK) or (110ac USA) etc.
wait 2 minutes for USB driver to be detected.
Click the tiny Apply TV symbol under Account.
Press and hold the Shift key and click restore icon. a pop up windows explorer appears.
Click the pre-download file and accept.
Await several minutes for the update.
Disconnect from the laptop. Reconnect HDMI cable to TV and away you go.
Login etc. I would recommend switch off automatic updates until this bug is fixed.
Change Location
Change Country
Log into Itunes etc and youtube.
Now i need a cold beer.

I JUST INSTALLED THE PATCH OR DOWNGRADE AND EUREKA! IT WORKED. I'M SO EXCITED TO REPORT BACK TO YOU AND RECOMMEND THIS PATCH OR DOWNGRADE, THAT I FOUND BY WAY OF A GOOGLE SEARCH. IF YOU'RE WORKING WITH APPLE TV VERSION A1427 3,1 THEN DOWNLOAD THE PATCH THAT I FOUND ABOVE THIS POST. IT WORKS. I JUST RECONNECTED MY APPLE TV AND ALSO, TRIED YOUTUBE AND IT'S BACK TO NORMAL. YOU CAN PAUSE AND RESTART TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT.
DON'T FORGET TO TURN OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES. PEACE AND HAPPY YOU TUBING.

Is there another source of March 24 update?????
Did you read the whole thread? The regular 7.6.2 update from Dec 14 fixes this issue. No need to shop elsewhere.
How to update your Apple TV - Apple Support
I went to Settings > General > Reset All Settings at it worked, but I've no idea how or why or if it will last.
Hey it works! Updated to 7.6.2 and no longer crashes when pausing on YouTube. Our long dark collective nightmare is finally over.
This started happening in the latest version on the Apple TV software, which is version 7.6 which was released in late September 2020. To people advising users to update to the latest OS to fix this issue, this does not fix it. Updating to the latest OS is in fact the cause of the issue. It didn't happen in the previous OS which was 7.5.
Hopefully it will be fixed in the next OS, or maybe YouTube need to do something.
At this point the only workaround is to downgrade to version 7.5. The steps are provided here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251805180?answerId=253489260022
Just an FYI, the firmware you linked is for slightly newer 3rd Gen Apple TV units that are identified as “AppleTV3,2”. Some people (a lot of people?) might need the firmware for the first release models (AppleTV3,1), which can be found on the same website you linked. To check your hardware just go to Settings > General > About
If your model number is A1427 you have an AppleTV3,1 and if the model number is A1469 you have an AppleTV3,2.
Now after many months and many peoples' diligent efforts and creative solutions, together with Apple's finally releasing software update 7.6.2 which fixes the broken YouTube app (i.e., the "hang on pause problem"), we are being told that the YouTube app will be permanently removed from the Gen.3 device as of sometime in March 2021.
This practice of app removal following a successful software version bug fix on the part of the Apple Corporation is abhorrable. Three questions come to mind:
1) Can one still prevent the YouTube app removal by down-grading the firmware and preventing automatic updates, as previously discussed in thread?
2) Is Apple now so thoughtless and careless so as not to care any more about backward compatibility and the quality of customer loyalty, but instead only about quantity of new product adoptions and new member signups?
3) Does anyone want to write up simple instructions for setting up alternatives like Kodi on the Raspberry Pi, in a safe manner without incurring any costs for, e.g., a vpn service?
My recommendation is that all those who have the same problem write a report in this link, so that Apple hear us.

Yay, Youtube pause/crashed fixed on 3rd gen Apple TV,
today's software update fixed the problem, pause/play works fine
thanks Apple
You may have an outdated version of TV OS, so please update that. If YouTube is the only content you have an issue with then that would point the finger at Youtube so you may need to reach out to them.
I downleveled the firmware and it worked great. It also solved the problem of green blotches. The CODEC still gets those areas wrong but they are the olof if the background instead of green. Hard to believe this passed QC.
Since the problem started immediately after upgrading to version 7.6 and downgrading to version 7.5 fixes it, it is most definitely an upgrade issue.
Finally, about time!
I can confirm that the latest patch addressed the YouTube issue and now users are able to pause YouTube videos without the Apple TV freezing up and crashing. Good news indeed.
