Greetings, denalirfg.
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. It’s understandable that you’d want to know what the dot is that you see while one calls.
“An orange indicator means the microphone is being used by an app on your iPhone.” Status icons and symbols on your iPhone
We hope this helps.
All the best.

Its actually an orange dot that appears red with some background choices, and it means your microphone is on, which is expected if you want the person on the other end of the call to hear you. See this Apple support article ➡️ About the orange and green indicators in your iPhone status bar - Apple Support
did you read the thread you posted in? It contains the answer..
but here is a support article that will tell you. (your red dot is really an orange dot, but display settings can make it look red)

I have it too. It’s definitely not orange.
I’m really not concerned with the color. I was more trying to understand why it’s there ?
It is there any time a microphone on the phone is on. When you are on a phone call there is a microphone on; if there wasn’t then the person on the other end of the call wouldn’t be able to hear you. You can test this the next time you are on a call; press the Mute button and watch it go out.
Similarly, whenever the camera is on there will be a green dot. You can try that also.
You can see which app is using the microphone by opening the Control Center (drag down from the upper right corner of the screen). it will display the name of the app using the mic or camera while it is in use and for a short while after that use is finished.
Chris, unfortunately that explanation has been removed from the KB article. With iOS 14.3 it appears red with certain backgrounds, but “less red” and closer to orange than it did with earlier versions.
Look at my post above yours. The red dot (it’s actually an orange dot that looks red with some backgrounds) means the microphone is on. That’s all it means. To test it tap the Mute button on the phone screen. If the microphone isn’t on it would be rather hard to have a phone conversation, wouldn’t it?
A few minutes after my post, I called a friend to see if she could hear me on the other line and could. So, then I called the restaurant that could not hear me previously, and now they could hear me. So it fixed itself. Bizarre.
Thanks anyways,
Maria

I noticed too during calls :-). Little cool thing...
Well, actually it is, but the black background darkens it. Compare it to the red hang up button.
