but here is a support article that will tell you. (your red dot is really an orange dot, but display settings can make it look red)

Its actually an orange dot that appears red with some background choices, and it means your microphone is on, which is expected if you want the person on the other end of the call to hear you. Chris, unfortunately that explanation has been removed from the KB article. With iOS 14.3 it appears red with certain backgrounds, but “less red” and closer to orange than it did with earlier versions.

Just wondering if it’s because the microphone is being used why is it red on phone calls and green when taking a video on camera which surely is the same thing as it’s being used.
