ios 14 missing password for email acount

After upgrading to ios 14.0 (and problem still occurs after 14.0.1), I am having issues accessing my IMAP email server - getting the error 'missing password'. Have checked the settings and the correct password is there... No issues prior to the upgrade.

Anyone else having similar issues?

SMTP is working OK (different account - username & password) - I can send emails, just cant receive them

iPhone SE, iOS 14

After wasting way too much time on this, I have found that if the password for the email address has a full stop in it (so i assume any character would work) then the email address works fine. If the password is only letters I am unable to add the email address.

.... all good if you don't have multiple devices to change the passord on .... not good when you need to change password on lots of devices.

I have seen this problem a number of times on different devices, with the following causes (and solutions) for the problem:

Wrong authentication method: at the bottom of the advanced part of the Mail account settings: if the authentication is "password", and the server prefers another method - typically MD5 challenge responce or NTLM (Exchange servers), the password isn't sent in the form expected by the server, resulting in the misleading error message: "missing password". Solution: change the authentication method to a method understood by the server. No need to recreate the account.

TLS/SSL turned off: also at the bottom of the Mail account preferences advanced part: many modern email services enforce encrypted delivery/transport of email, if is turned off the solution may be to turn it back on (or vice versa) - still no need to recreate the account.

Account created with an alias address - not the primary account: many email services allows the user to use the same account with different sending addresses, and Apple allows the user to create accounts using an alias address. This appears to sometimes confuse Apple Mail, resulting an account that can be validated without problems in Mail Preferences, but gives problems when used in Apple Mail. Solution: create the account using the email addreess given by the email supplier, add the preferred sending adresses by selecting the Email field in the Mail Preferences, and select the address that you primarely want to use when sending. This requires the mail account to be deleted and recreated.

In some cases a bad/intermediate network connection, appear to result in one or more email settings getting changed resulting in the problem. This normally occurs when fetching email from the server, resulting in the preferences for sending email still working fine.

I connected my iPhone to my macbook pro. I went into System Preferences on my macbook pro, manually update Date & Time, resync'd my iphone with macbook, fixed my problem... I too spent hours on the phone with Apple Support... several different 'specialist' the last specialist suggest this ... only on the phone with her for 5 minutes.... hope it works for you.

1. In Safari, Sign into AOL and go to the AOL Account security page.

2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords. It’s near the bottom.

3. Select the iPhone mail app from the drop down menu and click Generate.

  1. Go to the mail settings in the iPhone. Instead of putting in your regular AOL password, change the passwords for outgoing and incoming mail servers to this new password that was generated.

5. Click Done.

6. This doesn’t affect your regular password for logging in to AOL.

Well actually I sort of owe Apple an apology on this one (red face). Att changed the way they authenticate

pwd data and while I'd updated it elsewhere I let the thing slide for apple's email app. That is until it stopped working this morning. I changed my credentials and sure enough I have email access. So gripe retracted...

Still mildly miffed though about the previous MAC address change...

Never too old to learn something, in this case look closer!

After a long while, I approached this problem of using Gmail in the iOS Mail App via IMAP (as opposed to adding it using the Google/Gmail option they give you) from another angle: why was I trying to do this in the first place? I wanted access to Gmail Aliases. So I went hunting on Google along those lines and found the solution, which is similar to the ATT solutions mentioned in this thread.

Two relevant links:

and specifically within that article, this link:

Following that, I'm now once again happily enjoying using Gmail, with all the aliases I have, in the iOS Mail App.

Hope that helps someone.

Upgraded to 14.4 and started having this problem. Using Gmail with my own domain. So when creating account I use the manual method. This is where I started getting the "no password" error. Again this has been working for years. Interesting I created an account using the Gmail account option. I cannot send an email with a from address of my private domain but I do not get the "no password" error and can send and receive emails. Please fix or provide a workaround. Have tried many of the suggestions on this thread but none are working.
