Apple Watch Series 6 - CONSTANTLY locking

I have had my new Apple Watch Series 6 for a few days and it is CONSTANTLY locking itself when I am wearing it. I have sports band and it is tight on my wrist. Any tighter and I would be cutting off circulation. I have cleaned the sensors on the back, and still no lock. I have rebooted it, and no luck. I unlock it with my PIN and within a minute or less it's locked itself. Never had this issue with my old watch.

Hi there.

I have an Apple Watch series 3 and have had no problems with it locking until I did the last update.

I have wrist tattoos and it has been working fine until fairly recently.

I found this article which gives options you may have already tried.

I just turned the passcode off which isn’t ideal, but it got rid of the locking problem anyway.

Hope you found a solution.

Marla

Hi there.

I know it’s crap really as we shouldn’t need to do this.

I’ m hoping they can correct it with the next update, and I’ll use the passcode and check it out again to see if the update corrected the issue.

I don’t use all the health apps or Apple Pay, but the heart rate function works fine on my watch without the passcode. Considering how bloody expensive these watches are, this is poor service quality from Apple.

Good luck 🙋🏾‍♀️

Purchased the series 6 for myself for Christmas. Worked fine for 4 days then started locking whilst wearing it. Took it into apple store, they ran diagnostic and did the unpair and pair, restarted both phone and watch blah blah agreed it was a problem and would send it away to get looked at.

Apple sent a text saying couldn't replicate issue....posted it back to me...got it today and what do you know its still doing the exact same thing.

After reading comments on here have turned off wrist detection for now but NOT happy at all.

Can anyone tell me if the fall alert still works with wrist detection off? I ride horses and this was my main reason for wanting the watch.

Apple need to fix this issue ASAP its an expensive piece of technology that isn't working as it is advertised, sounds like an issue for ombudsman if not rectified as selling it claiming it can do these things yet you have to turn off the wrist detection to actually use the watch which in turn switches off a lot of functions that we bought the watch to do.

Hi there.

Mega frustrating. I didn’t turn wrist detection off, just switched off the passcode so that stopped it from locking. Not ideal I grant you. Try this instead of turning off wrist detection.

I think this is an update issue as I’ve had my watch for a while and never had a problem until after the update.

Ive noticed my watch keeps pausing during the workout apps, so you can’t track your workout stats properly.

If Apple don't get this sorted out, people will stop buying their watches due to it having these faults.

Trouble is if you buy another smartwatch you lose the ability to have all the smart elements between the watch and the phone when pairing.

If it meant having a watch with poor functionability, and getting a Samsung phone and watch, I’ll go over to Samsung. Haven’t got time for all this rubbish.

Just waiting for the next update to see if it corrects the problems.....these watches are too expensive for all this mess......this is not a series 6 watch issue. I have a series 4 watch.

Good luck.

Hey Apple - this is a forum that I have to sign into using my Apple ID

please advise on what you are proposing to undertake to solve this issue - otherwise having this forum is as good as having the Apple Watch whereas only part of its functionality works

in this case it’s to advise others experiencing the same issues that indeed they are not going mad

Your not wrong !

my watch is okay getting calls ect but during workouts it’s constantly pausing (the option to pause when stopped is off) I did a 23 min run today and my watch said 1 min 16 seconds ! and when using the watch it keeps locking, very annoying when your midway through a long message.

Apple need to address this.

if it’s the case it don’t like tattooed skin then for me it’s goodbye to the watch as I’m covered in tattoos 😂

Well I was hoping that the latest update might have an impact, so I put my passcode back on. Unfortunately my phone just kept locking again. If Apple don’t sort this out, Apple watches are done for me.

My contract is due up in March on my phone, so if it’s not sorted by then I’ll be changing my phone to its competitors; as there’s no point having an iPhone with a different smartwatch as you’ll not have access to all the features due to the fidelity to Apple.

Apple need to get this sorted ASAP. Annoying.

Same issue here.

I have tattoos on both wrists. Constantly locking itself. I wear it on my left wrist tried swapping and won’t even recognise it’s on my right wrist when I put it on there (almost solid black tattoo)

last nights update didn’t fix the issue either.

come on apple this is getting effing ridiculous now, not had a problem with any other series of Apple Watch!

Hi there

its not the series of the watch mate. I have a series 4 that was working fine. I have wrist tattoos but one is not where the watch will have contact with it, and my watch just started locking and the fitness tracking just pauses by itself, so you can’t even record that data either. It’s resulted in me taking the passcode off as it was getting irritating to keep unlocking. I thought Apple would have addressed the issue, so when the last update happened, the problem remained.

These watches are far too expensive to have these issues of functionality. I’m not prepared to upgrade phone and watch in March as I planned, just to inherit this mess on the watch. I’ll go to Apple’s competitor.

I think there are several different issues causing this watch locking failure. For me, it looks like the update to WatchOS 7.3 a few days ago triggered this problem.. the watch was locking every time I stopped actively using it.

I restarted my watch and then turned off and on the "wrist detection" option from the "Passcode" settings in the watch app on my iPhone, and the problem seems to be solved.
