seem to be having some trouble with connecting my viewsonic VG2439smh to my imac. Its a brandnew imac purchased in july this year. I have a Thinkpad dock, a usb-c, hdmi and all the other cables I thought I might need. (Also have a usb with one side with a square end) no matter what my monitor will now show up.
You don't have to turn anything off.
Normaly you use both, but if you aren't going to use the USB ports on the back of the Viewsonic, you don't have to use the USB-A to USB-B cable.
ok! and last question does everything need to be off before the Mac will detect the monitor or can I plug and go?

ok! Would this work? I have a usb to mini display port cable that came with the monitor. and the square end goes into the monitor and the usb-c goes into the iMac?
The USB cable that came with the Viewsonic is USB-A (Flat) to USB-B (Square), not Mini DisplayPort. It connects the monitor's USB to one of the USB-A ports on the computer. No adapter is needed. It does not handle video.
Use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable for the video.
Connect it from one of the iMac's USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports with a USB C to DisplayPort Cable, such as:

A USB-A or USB-C to USB_B cable will make the USB ports on the back of the monitor work, but won't provide video.
so then I need both or just the usb-c to DisplayPort?
