Airpod Pros make iPhone 11 freeze

Since iOS 14, when ever I connect my AirPod pros to my iPhone 11 any audio/video app freezes. Have tried on iPad Pro, partners iPhone 11 and they work fine. I’ve reset AirPods, reset iPhone settings and still

nothing. Other Bluetooth headphones work. It seems to be my phone not the pods. HELP!

Hopefully this will help someone else, when I connected my AirPods I had the same issue. They would connect but wouldn’t play anything and when I tried to play a song or make a call it froze my phone up. I saw this thread and and saw that the Apple Watch and AirPods being connected at the same time wouldn’t work. I disconnected the watch, reconnected the AirPods, then reconnected the watch. The AirPods would work, but I had to disconnect the watch every time I took the headphones out of the case. Took some investigating but I finally found the solution! No need to disconnect your watch to get the AirPods to work (at least so far no issues).

1) Update to the latest iOS on watch and phone

2) Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings (it’s a pain because notifications and any other settings are reset to factory but luckily you don’t lose anything)

3) When the phone has restarted, connect the AirPods by holding down the button on the back, case open and headphones in the case

4) Make sure watch is connected by going into the app, connect it if it isn’t

You should be all set after those steps! The AirPods won’t freeze the phone up and the Apple Watch won’t need to be disconnected every time you use the AirPods! Hope this helps.

I’m having the same problem, but someone on this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251806006 said that they have an Apple Watch, and if they turn the Bluetooth off on their Apple Watch, connect the AirPods, and then turn on Bluetooth on their Apple Watch, that the AirPods work fine.

This workaround is working for me with iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 14.2, Apple Watch series 6, and trying to use AirPods pro.

I was having the same issue on my iPhone 11 Pro Max with my AirPods Pro and tried everything! Even talked to Apple support ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE ONLY WAY THE AIRPODS WILL WORK WITHOUT ISSUES TURN YOUR APPLE WATCH OFF AS IT IS INTERFERING WITH THE AIRPODS ! I DID IT AND NOW THEY WORK FINE!! Shame to have to do this but it’s the only way for now. Hope this helps.

It’s sucks to have to unpair the Apple Watch , Connect AirPods , then reconnect the Apple Watch for them to work properly.

But it works ! I was having the exact same problem. I thought it was a defective pair of pods. Exchanged them out 3 times.

hope Apple have an update that fixes this problem being is inconvenient to have to go through steps to listen to music or just use them.

@Chuck_3rd hope this works for you and everybody else.

Thanks @D.Muhammad for the info.

Thanks for the additional details Crossy85!

If possible, can you delete and redownload the app from the App Store? This article outlines the steps: How to delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

After removing and re-downloading the app, does the issue persist? If it does, this is something the Apple Support team would want to take a closer look at. We'd recommend reaching out to them at that point, should the reinstall of the app not resolve the issue. You can see contact options here: Get Support.

Take care!

Hey Crossy85,

As we understand it, when connecting your AirPods Pro to your iPhone, the app you're in becomes non-responsive? Or does it pause? In essence, how do you get the app to begin working again?

Additionally, take a look through the steps in this article: If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open, and let us know if they help along with the answers to the previous questions.

We'll follow up from there.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply Chuck,

I have reset iPhone, reset settings, reset Bluetooth devices and reset AirPods. I usually just have to swipe up and close the app once it has stopped working. The apps are affected are only the ones that have audio on them such as Netflix, Apple Music and talk sport radio.

It may be worth noting that when I have tested the AirPods with other devices (another iPhone 11 and an iPad Pro) the AirPods are recognised and the case logo comes up and pairs and shows the demo of features - like transparency mode etc. When connected to MY phone, it doesn’t go through the demo features, almost like it hasn’t fully paired.

once I have unpaired the AirPods the app works perfectly fine. To confuse things more, original AirPods work fine :/
