Alarm volume TOO LOUD in iOS14

I installed iOS 14 on my iPhone 7 Plus, and now the alarm BLARES!! The phone's volume setting is low to moderate; the Sounds/Haptics is set to low/moderate. The alarm volume overrides those settings. In Alarms there is no way to set a volume.

When the alarm goes off, using the 'volume down' button snoozes the alarm instead of adjusting the volume.

Help!

Are you using the regular alarm? Or are you using the new Sleep function? If you're using the Sleep feature, open the Health app, go to Sleep>Your Schedule. Tap on your schedule(s) then tap "Edit". You'll be able to adjust the alarm volume there.

If you're using the regular Alarm, it does not have a separate volume control. I'd suggest you try a different alarm sound.

Thank you!

I had to take 1 more step as this only changed the next alarm (tomorrow’s). By accessing “edit sleep schedule” from the regular clock alarm I was able to turn down the volume for all alarms. That option wasn’t there when I went straight in from the Health App.

I hope this helps the next person who is trying to remember if they dropped their phone after being scared awake!

I had this problem too and I think I just found the solution.

  1. On Settings / Sounds & Haptics / Ringer and Alerts: turn OFF "Change with buttons" (this is probably the key for fixing this problem)
  2. Using the slide on Ringer and Alerts, turn the volume to the desired position (I would just turn it to zero, it will still ring but very gently)
  3. Open the the alarm app and ADD a new alarm, do not use an old alarm
  4. Click on Sound and choose the ringtone you want (you should hear it play it at the chosen volume).

If you want to test this out, follow the above instructions setting a very quiet timer for a minute from now. Then use the side buttons to increase the volume on your iPhone to the maximum. Then lock your screen and wait for the magic to happen. Important: if you try this while your screen is still open it won't work because the volume to the max will override your alarm volume, but that won't happen with the screen locked.

I just tried it a few times while writing this and it worked every time. I actually realised the "change with button OFF" was the problem while writing this.

HI, I spoke to apple support since posting on here previously. Turning off Attention Aware Features under Face ID is the fix, for the loud alarm issue, although not ideal as it affects more than the alarm.

The update in IOS to incorporate Attention Aware Feature is to make sure alerts, sounds, rings etc. are at max volume until you look at the iphone and Face ID recognition knows you have looked at the alert to action/respond to it.

Bit of an annoying update if you ask me as I would like to be in control in the first place of what alerts me on the phone, not have the phone decide and then me have to adjust it.

BE AWARE though - automatic IOS updates reset the Attention Aware Feature to be turned back on. My phone recently updated to the latest IOS update overnight and I was awoken next morning by the BLARING alarm again due to Attention Aware being turned back on by the auto update. Scared the c**p out of me. NOT a nice way to be woken up!

I can also confirm that it IS an issue with the Attention Aware Features option in settings. Regardless of what it is intended to do, there is a glitch where it will set your alarm to max volume until you look at your phone and then it will reset to whatever you have set with the volume slider. I have tested this and turning it off seems to solve the issue.

Turning off Attention Alert (Settings > Face ID & Attention > Attention Aware Features (off)” fixed it for me, too.

I just transitioned from iPhone 6s to 12. I did a side-by-side comparison - alarms initially blared at full blast and then decreased on the 12 after I picked it up or looked at, but were always reasonable and unchanging at the same level on the 6s. After I made the change above, the alarm volume is the same on both phones, and does not decrease over time, regardless of my handling of the phone.

I’m not sure what (undesirable) side effects this may cause — but it solved this problem, which had been bugging me greatly.

Having gone through the auto update **** with IOS 14.2 resetting alarms to their loudest level, when I saw IOS 14.3 was being automatically updated last night, I turned off auto-update. As a result i was not woken up by a blaring alarm this morning, however, I am still on IOS 14.2 and will have to manually update.

Why should I have to turn off auto-updates to compensate for unnecessary "improvements" by Apple?

Apple need to isolate the Clock Alarm feature from being affected by other settings outside of that App. I have raised it as an issue with them but haven't seen a fix as yet.

(FYI - to others that may be experiencing the loud alarm problem in IOS 14 - go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention-Aware Features and turn off Attention-Aware Features. REMEMBER - IOS updates will re-set this so need to turn off auto updates if don't want to be woken by a blaring alarm again once set to an acceptable level.

Also if you want to set the alarm volume with the Volume buttons on the side of the phone, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringer and Alerts > Change with Buttons and turn on Change with Buttons - BUT BE AWARE this will likely also affect the ringer volume on your phone for receiving calls).

This "shortcut/automation" seems to work on my iphone 6s / ios 14.3; it's worth a try...

-First, in Settings/Sounds/RingersAndAlerts, I have the ChangeWithButtons slider turned On.

-In the Shortcuts app, tap the Automation icon at bottom middle.

  • tap "+", then "CreatePersonalAutomation"
  • "TimeOfDay", then pick a Daily time that would be prior to whenever your alarm would be set
  • "Next", "AddAction"
  • in the 'SearchForAppsAndActions' space, type "Set Volume", then tap the "Set Volume" result icon
  • tap the nn% number shown, then slide the bar to pick a lower volume level %. Then try it out twice by tapping the SolidArrow icon at bottom right, to play the automation. Then tap "Next"
  • scroll to the bottom, and turn Off the "AskBeforeRunning" slidebar. Confirm the "Don'tAsk" popup.
  • tap "Done"
  • (Open and review your new Personal Automation, making sure the EnableThisAutomation slider is turned On.)

I hope this works for you! Good luck.

After updating to iOS 14 I was completely infuriated by the volume issue (and my husband was like, what the **** are you doing?!, when I was trying to find an alarm sound because I didn’t know this): you still have control over the alarm settings by using the bedtime/sleep monitoring feature which has been moved from the regular clock app to the health app, AND, for people like me who don’t want to have to go into the Health app to use this feature, I was VERY happy to see that, at least after I set my sleep schedule the first time after updating to iOS 14, my bedtime alarm appeared at the top of the regular alarm list, AND it can be adjusted there so you don’t have to go into the Health app ever again if you don’t want to! hallelujah! I don’t want to use the Health app features (!), I just need to be able to:

-set different alarms for different days

-use the Early Riser alarm sound

-adjust the alarm volume without changing the phone ring volume

All of these are possible in the bedtime alarm feature, but only one (setting the alarm for specific days) can be achieved with the regular alarms.

Why Apple made this change, and why they made the regular alarm interface tiny and boxed in it’s beyond me, but at least there’s a simple workaround.

gabsalot162, I’m not sure who’s post you are referring to, but you can control the wake up alarm volume separate from the phone ringer, etc. volume by setting your wake up alarm through the Bedtime function. Apple hid it in the health app for iOS 14 but once you set an alarm there it shows up in your regular alarm list, at the top. And you don’t have to go into the health app again. hope that helps, it helped a lot me!

I have an iPhone 6 and just did the iOS update a couple weeks ago, at which point I was having this problem too, and after about an hour of reading through these posts and trying everyone’s suggestions with no success, I was about to give up. I had one more idea and it seems to be working. Worth a shot.

In Sounds settings, my toggle for “change with buttons” is turned on. Then I used my volume buttons to set the volume to the level I wanted for my alarm. Like you said, once I hit snooze, the second alarm would blare. So, my last idea was to keep the toggle button on, reset the volume back to the level I wanted, and then in the screen below, I noticed the volume level was much higher, so I adjusted that to the same level as I put for my alarm, and tested it out. My alarm went off and the volume did not go up for the second alarm (after snoozing). The ringer and volume bars still pop up on the screen without me doing anything, but the volume level does not change. Hopefully this will help others having the same problem!!
