Probably an Open App:

Be Certain iTunes is Not the Open App. Click on the Desktop, and then it should record, being it will be on Finder. It all has to do with Piracy. You might have to hold down the command key and then keep pressing tab, until the smiley face (Finder) is select.

1. Ensure the audio recording device you selected is working (recording) properly. 
2. Make sure your save to location is writeable, such as the Desktop.
