New LG CX OLED Audio skipping

Got a new LG CX OLED 55 inch yesterday. I hooked it up to my 4th gen Apple tv. Now picture quality is great, but my audio keeps cutting in and out, like it stuttering. I bought a good quality HDMI cable and have since actually tried several HDMI cables and they all do the same thing. I also tried all 4 HDMI ports on the TV same result. If I use the build in app on the TV using WEBPOS they are fine no audio issues. I have tried every option in the TV for sound and in Apple TV same issue. It's like apple TV isn'y able to keep up with the audio or something. Any idea what would cause audio to cut in and out? I posted over at Apple TV reddit but no one has a clue LOL, seems like I am the only person having this issue. Running the latest official version for Apple TV didn't work also downloaded the latest beta version that didn't work either. If you go on Reddit apparently there is a ton of people having the same issue with Apple TV and this LG TV. pretty sure it's an Apple TV problem though because all my other streaming devices work perfectly fine with the LG TV.

Okay I pretty much figured it out. If you watch any video that has Dolby Atmos sound that's when it's going to screw up. So if you watch a video on Netflix that has Dolby Atmos sound you'll be fine. As soon as you exit out of that and say launch a video on YouTube or any other video type app that isn't Dolby Atmos enabled that's when the audio will start skipping. Somehow when you try to play a video that isn't Dolby Atmos enabled after just watching one that was it screws up the audio. So what you have to do is basically restart the Apple TV turn your TV off then turn it back on and then you can watch anything that isn't Dolby Atmos enabled and the audio will be perfectly fine. You can go into Netflix again and watch a video that has Dolby Atmos sound but once you're finished you have to restart your Apple device turn your TV off and turn it back on then normal audio will be fine. so anytime you see the Dolby Atmos sound Logo Pop up in the top right hand corner you'll know that when you're done watching whatever you're watching you'll have to restart Apple TV and your TV unless you're going to another video that is Dolby Atmos enabled then you'll be fine it's only when you go to regular audio that it starts to screw up. I know this isn't a fix it's more like a Band-Aid. But the problem definitely is software based and it's from the Apple TV. none of my other streaming devices and I've tried almost all of them do this only Apple TV. If others are having the same issue you should try what I suggested and try duplicating what I did. I'm going to send this off to Apple tech support as well

Same issue with LG GX, Sonos ARC and Apple TV 4K. After watching Dolby Atmos material the sound on other formats will drop out. The Netflix trick worked the first time around, but when I tried again I couldn't get the sound to stop glitching. For me it worked going into the sound menu on the LG and switching Digital Sound Out to PCM and back again to Pass-Through.

I’m fed up with this now...the ATV and my CX worked just fine for a few days, but today we were watching shows on Netflix and decided to watch a purchased movie through iTunes. The sound kept skipping. Restarted many time. No change. I said f-it and grabbed my Roku. Guess what? It worked just fine with zero issues. I’ll stick with my Roku and my CX now. Don’t tell me it’s an LG issue.

I switched back to running everything through my receiver and it fixed the problem.

I have a Pioneer VSX 302 which supports DV and HDR, the only reason I ran everything through tv was I heard there was input lag for gaming but really I don’t notice and will keep it this way

not really helpful for you sorry, but just responding- hopefully it’s fixed at some point

Same skipping audio issue here after watching Atmos for me. LG65cx and Sonos arc soundbar using eArc.

switching atv and lg tv off and on rarely works to fix it.

The only semi reliable fix for me is after watching an atmos show, switching sound format on the ATV to change to Dolby digital 5.1, watching something else for a few seconds then switching back to best quality (Atmos).

Same issue here. LG OLED CX 55 inch, Apple TV 4K. Had to turn Atmos off completely on Apple TV to prevent this, which is disappointing since it sounds amazing when enabled. Behaves the same regardless of whether my sound bar is attached or not; same glitches with built-in speakers. Apple tvOS update that solves this will be an amazing Christmas present.

I've got this exact same issue.

First noticed it when using the TV's speakers (I have an LG GX model, which is the same as the CX, just a different shape, for the most part) and it's still occurring with an eARC-connected Sonos Arc soundbar.

Super annoying... there have to be a good number of people who have both an Apple TV 4k *and* a recent LG OLED. Hopefully this can get fixed quickly.

Hi, just to give some info because I have the same problem, after doing lots of tests, talked with technicians that they were very positive about the problem coming from the Apple TV, finally the problem is not the Apple TV, it comes from the LG TV, it happens with others devices, in my case with an Xbox.

LG is preparing an update that it looks it will fix the issue, but it starting to get a little long, I know this because the LG technician communicated me to tell me that.

Is a very annoying issue and it drives me nuts, doing some tricks is possible to get the sound back normally but sometimes it comes back after the TV is being shut off for maybe 1 hour.

So lets hope the update comes soon.

I just experienced this problem after watching a Dolby Atmos video on my Apple TV and LG CX 48. I tried various things such as powering down TV, restarting and power down Apple TV, etc and nothing worked.

I then moved my ATV from HDMI port 3 to #1 where my Xbox had been plugged in. Low and behold, the apple TV problem was resolved. I then moved it back to HDMI 3 and the problem reoccurred. Out of curiosity, I then plugged my Xbox Series S into HDMI 3 and it manifested the same audio problem!

I powered down everything, restarted the CX, ATV, and Xbox and the problem was still present. If I plugged the ATV or Xbox into #3, the problem was there, If I plugged either into #1 all was well.

At that point, I googled the problem and found this thread. I saw an answer further down that said unplugging the CX resolved the issue. so I tried that and SUCCESS, the problem went away. So in my case, the problem somehow affected the HDMI port 3, and did not matter if I had the ATV or Xbox plugged into it. and conversely, plugging the ATV into HDMI #1 fixed the issue, unless I plugged it back into HDMI 3....

Devices used: LG® OLED 55 GX9LA, TV 4k, UHD HDMI cable

I can confirm the issue on my setting. After watching for example Netflix with Dolby Atmos™ content I experience rhythmical audio dropouts every 4-5 seconds for about 1 second each. When connecting a Bluetooth® Headphone to the TV, the bug does not take effect. So it can be narrowed down to an issue with the audio that is sent via HDMI.

A complete restart of the TV solves the issue while a restart of the TV doesn't.

Nevertheless it is an issue only affecting the input from the Apple TV, not the BlueRay™-Player. This doesn't really help as the issue seems to be connected to switching back after playing Dolby Atmos™ content. Could be the TV having issues with that or the TV.

However, this issue is really really annoying and disturbing the user experience immensely.

If it can't be nailed down to on of the devices, Apple support should get in contact with LG and maybe other affected high end TV producers to solve this in an upcoming software update.

Hello, the AppleTv has nothing to do with the issue, it happens also with my Xbox Series X, it comes from the LG Tv confirmed by a technician that changed the motherboard in my TV and also by the LG Service.

They are working in a firmware update that will solve the issue. A moderator form an LG forum said that is expecting this month, so let’s hope is soon. 👍

No, they changed me the motherboard thinking it was that the problem. After turned on the TV with the new motherboard didn’t reproduce the issue because the firmware in the new was an older version and of course it was an update available, after the update the problem showed. So after investigation and showing them that the problem show when using Dolby Atmos for any source connected to the TV, then was when they told me that a new update will come to resolve this.

Those any sources connected directly to the sound bar don’t have the issue, so clearly the problem is the TV.
