Won't shut down properly

I recently received and installed a version upgrade to 10.15.7 to my MacBook Pro. Ever since the upgrade was installed, I have had a problem shutting my laptop down successfully. I tried to initiate a support conversation with Apple Support but every time I input my serial number the response is the serial number is invalid. I'm pulling the s/n right off the About this Mac Overview tab so I know it is correct. So my questions are:

  1. How do I resolve the issue of the shut down not working correctly? It appears like it is going to shut down but after a few minutes it reopens and says that it did not shut down properly....
  2. How do I get to Apple support if it doesn't recognize my s/n as accurate?
  3. Is there a Apple Support phone number that I can get access to without having to input the s/n?
