MacBook Pro black screen but camera light on

Hi everyone,

I was using my MacBook Pro (touchbar 2020) in class and the battery ran off. When I plugged it at home, the iSight camera Green light turned on and the screen remained black. The macbook emits sound when I plug in the charger cable. It won’t shut down or fully turn on. I tried :

  • Holding the power button to force shutdown
  • pressing the power button, and then pressing S
  • Resetting the SMC
  • resetting the PRAM

For the last two I’m not sure I was able to do it properly since the Mac won’t turn off (or fully on) in the first place. It remained completely unresponsive to all these operations. Only thing is sometimes the light will turn off when I do the SMC routine, only to turn back on 3 seconds later.

I’m all out of ideas, I would be really happy to get some help. Thank you so much, everyone.

To perform an SMC reset you need to follow the instructions for a T2 Mac:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

You either hold the power button for 10 seconds after which the laptop will power off (usually with a swish of the fans) or by pressing & holding the Left Control + Left Option + Right Shift keys for seven seconds then while still holding those keys press & hold the power button for about seven seconds (you should see the laptop power off and hear a swoosh of the fans as it happens).

If you have access to another Mac you may want to try "Reviving" and "Restoring" the T2 firmware:

https://support.apple.com/guide/apple-configurator-2/revive-or-restore-mac-firmware-apdebea5be51/mac

Beware that "Restoring" the T2 firmware will destroy all data on the laptop so I hope you have a good backup.

Yep, I hadn't even reached the two-month mark yet when it happened to my machine. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, although your situation may be different. If you do go the repair route, I also hope you have better luck with it than I did. I dropped it off a month ago and still don't have either the repaired machine or a replacement (which is supposedly on the way, since the repair has taken so long) in my hands yet.
