my Apple Maps is using 15gb of documents and data. When I delete the app the entire 15gb get reassigned to the “other” category. When I reinstall the app it reassigns the 15gb back to Apple Maps “documents and data”.
I was so frustrated that I did a factory reset a few days ago, which worked. But all day my phone has been running hot and losing charge on the charger and my Apple Maps is back up to 15gb of documents and data. (I have been driving all day with Apple Maps for directions via Car Play.
it seem Apple CarPlay, long days of driving, are required to recreate this issue. I can also confirm that a factory reset and restore fixes the issue, but not permanently.
I’m having the same issue. Maps is currently using 47.36 GB of my phone storage. My phone has seemed sluggish since the iOS 14 update, so I was looking into settings and noticed my iPhone Storage was unusually high.
Of note: my wife has the identical phone on software 14.0.1 and she has no issues. My phone is on 14.1 and I have the issue. I will try installing 14.2 (which I just noticed is available). I will report back results.
i’m not so sure this is directly related to carplay.
i have an iphone 8+ on 14.0.1 at the moment. the phone is used with carplay but i went out yesterday in my other car which does not have carplay and used maps to navigate somewhere. i don’t know the exact storage use before the journeys but it didn’t register as a high usage of storage before (like ever). drove for 1.5hrs total and it’s now reporting as 2.1GB used. i’ve not used maps since i updated.
has anyone updated to 14.2 and has seen a fix for this issue from this latest ios?
thanks
Same problem on my work phone.
iPhone 8
iOS 14.2
Maps was holding ~30 GB of docs & data. I backed it up to my computer then powered it down for 5 minutes. Upon restart, Apple Maps is down to 82 MB of docs and data. Did not reset, did not restore, just backup and power cycle.
Same here! and it continues to get bigger. Has anyone figured this out?

backup your phone and reset it. the memory corrected for me
Maps isn’t growing again after the reset?
This storage is consider “documents and data” so offloading doesn’t get rid of it. Deleting the app just moves the GB’s data to “other”.
I deleted Maps, turned iPhone off,, then back on. Storage returned to “normal”. Reloaded Maps. Storage seems ok for now.
The shutdown/restart/reload maps did temporarily remove the used memory from the iPhone but alas, it's back. Back to square one.
same issue on iPhone XR as soon as I update to iOS 14. Like everyone else, removing and reinstalling brought it back at around 40gb. Problem persists despite daily backups.
No solution. Did a "Erase All Content and Settings" and memory from Maps is gone. Don't know if it will accumulate again.
Yes it was, I deleted the thing, I use google maps now and it does not grow
