GMAIL DUPLICATE DRAFTS ON MAC WITH MAIL AND IMAP

So I know this has been asked before, but posted solutions don't work for me out here in 2020.

There is no "checkbox" for "save drafts on the server" in the current preferences for Mail (see image)

There IS a dropdown for "drafts mailbox" but in accordance with another answer online, I set it to a local folder. Doesn't matter, I get dozens and dozens of half-finished drafts saved in gmail, when I log into it with a browser.

I even get the reverse, whereby if I compose a message in the browser Gmail site, I then see dozens of half-saved drafts later on in Mail. What a mess. Help!
