Apple TV: app vs channel

What is the difference on an Apple TV HD between downloading an app for a channel (e.g., Sundance Now) vs. a native channel on the Apple TV for the same service? Is there a difference in content or cost (e.g., monthly only vs annual option)? I think I may have ended up with two subscriptions, one for the channel and one for the app.

And to add to Urquhart1244's helpful answer (and to fully answer my own question), Sundance Now responded as follows:

"Thank you for contacting Sundance Now!

"Great questions, not cost difference at all, only significant difference is the Sundance Now Channel only offers monthly subscriptions and the Sundance Now App offer both monthly and annual subscriptions.

"One other big difference in the two subscriptions is, you can only access the Sundance Now Channel through AppleTV and will not be able to use it on other devices that has the Sundance Now App. The Sundance Now App subscription you can use on any device that offers the Sundance Now app."

There is a difference, they are separate services that are not exchangeable. They have different perks, and different terms and conditions. If you mix them up, then you may end up with two subscriptions for the same content, even in case that both are payed through Apple.
