macbook suddenly sending all messages as SMS not iMessage!!

Long story short - I got a new SIM card for a new phone line (but didn't have my other iphone for it unlocked yet). The customer service rep recommended that I swap the new SIM into the current device I had to make sure the number had been activated properly (big mistake!! and pretty sure the cause of all this). She promised me it wouldn't mess anything up but now suddenly my macbook & iphone have been inconsistently sending SMS messages to iphone users. In fact, I can't send iMessages at all from my macbook anymore! The only way it works on my iPhone is if the apple user responds back to me with iMessage it usually will convert my messages there after to iMessage. However this is NOT the case for my macbook. The iMessages fail to send from my mac and they end up having to send as SMS.

So far I have tried contacting T-Mobile tech support who then transferred me to Apple (no one could help).

Just noticed that I am able to send iMessage from my macbook to a very few select apple users when in the past there was no issue

I have:

-reset iPhone network settings

-factory reset my iPhone

-disabled iMessage in iPhone settings & turned off for several minutes before turning back on to re-enable iMessage

-signed out of messages in macbook & rebooted after several minutes

-toggled between having messages send & receive from my Apple ID & phone number for both devices

-enabled messages in iCloud

In addition to the advice @jdo_apple provided try toggling Messages off & on for both/all devices. Try toggling the Messages settings for SMS off & on as well as any other relevant settings. I've had this happen out of the blue for no reason. Somehow the Messages preferences get messed up and toggling the settings will usually resolve it. I'm not sure if that will be the case here or not. It is something very easy to do though.

Hello meiday13,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are unable to send messages from your MacBook Air as expected. First, Make sure your MacBook Air and iPhone are fully up to date, as the updates contain stability fixes that can resolve issues like yours, as well as important security updates to keep your iPhone and Mac safe.

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

How to update the software on your Mac

Use the App Store to update apps on Mac

How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac

Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log in to your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Graphics performance limited in macOS Recovery, safe mode, or Guest User mode

Cheers!
