Printing to older laserwriter from MacOS 10
Printing to old Laserwriter
I am posting this as a solution not a question as I just managed to figure it out.
I was trying to setup an old laserwriter 16/600 with High Sierra but had some trouble getting it to work. These are the steps I took.
1. Removed the printer from "Printers & Scanners" preference pane. (As I had tried to set it up from there first and discovered adding it there first stops the later steps from working)
2. Copied the PPD files to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
3. Opened Terminal and entered: sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes (enter admin password when prompted)
4. Opened Safari and went to: localhost:631/admin/
5. Click on the 'Edit configuration file'
6. In the configuration file, on the line "BrowseLocalProtocols dnssd" (6th line down) add "lpd" (without the quotes) after dnssd.
7. Click the save changes at the bottom and enter your username and password.
8. Open the "Printers & Scanners" preference pane and click the '+' to add your printer
9. Select the 'IP' globe and enter the IP address of your printer. (If you don't know - you'll have to find it out somehow - there are various methods in this forum)
10. Select your printer PPD from the 'Use:' pop up list and click 'add'
This has worked for Mojave and Catalina as well
I hope this helps someone else.
