My Mac won't recognise usb connections. The keyboard and optical mouse work. But if I attach iPhone or external cd drive- it does not recognise it at all, and does not show in finder. I've switched off and on, swapped ports and cables and nothing!!

My Mac won't recognise usb connections. The keyboard and optical mouse work. But if I attach my iPhone or an external cd drive- it does not recognise it at all, and does not show in finder.

Before going for a service thought I'd check with you all

Please reset the NVRAM and restart in Safe Mode and then retest.
