iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

Beatrice, please hang in there. This is clearly not fixed for many of us, and while I have now had intermittent success, that is in no way a "fix". In fact, it is more dangerous given its unreliability as you don't know when or where you will be left stranded. Apple needs to continue looking for the needle in the haystack as they are the ones who put it there. Their categorization of the situation is maddening. It seems to me that from all the info they have gathered, they know when/what release brought about the issue. I would think one approach to develop a fix for this is to go back and unstack the sequencing protocol they put in place at that time, and rebuild it so maps works for all of us. Otherwise, the needle is going to continue to move around the haystack and who knows how it will manifest itself in future releases.

Absolutely correct that the “fix” is not a fix. When I first tested 14.5.1 with Apple Maps the first few seconds of driving directions were clipped just as before. But when I then tested a second time both Apple Maps and Google Maps worked perfectly with no clipping.  Today when I started out with Google Maps after having first disconnected and then reconnected Bluetooth (don’t ask me why), the first driving direction was clipped just as before 14.5.1. But then, without my having done anything, the second direction and all subsequent directions exhibited no clipping whatsoever. This makes me think that the “fix” of 14.5.1 was to add a kind of stickiness to the awakening from the standby status that was introduced in 14 and is clearly the root cause of the problem. In other words when first connected and perhaps later after some period of disuse Bluetooth is in standby and it takes a few seconds for it to awake and begin to function. But once active Bluetooth remains that way and does not revert to standby as it did prior to 14.5.1. At least that is my guess. It should be noted that I had no music, phone calls or anything else coming through Bluetooth in between driving directions.  It is frustrating that we must all play detective in this way when programmers at Apple obviously know exactly what is going on.

I'm going to add my voice to this conversation. I have an iPhone 12, with 14.5.1. The Nav delay is there it is frustrating missing the first second or two of direction. Not only is there a Nav delay. Sometimes I have Nav voice over my bluetooth in my Subaru, other times it does not connect even though I can still make and receive phone calls.

Hi yecats63,

I have always had a very occasional situation (once every couple of months) where the voice directions stopped working in my 2013 Subaru. This has happened since the car was new. When it happens I turn the car off and on again (sometimes even at a traffic light if I think I have time, but don't tell Her Majesty's finest!) and it works again. Also if I just leave it it tends to start working again in 5 to 10 minutes.

This is very rare, and I'm pretty sure it's a car problem, so I have never raised it with Apple.

I don't think this is related to 'delay' problem, but it could be.

Just got a call from my Apple contact - as a result of my letter to Time Cook a few months ago. Just a FYI this person has kept in contact with me at least twice a week. He said Apple looked at my "logging" form a few weeks ago and they think they know what the issue is and have developed a fix which should be in 14.6 or 14.7. Based on Expertperson's post looks like it may be in 14.6I think we

I can't wait to try it out. Let's hope this is it!

I’m very happy that 14.6 had worked for some people. And thanks for all the kind words but without everyone chipping in and posting to the forum we wouldn’t have the success we have so far. Apple is paying attention to our discussions and everyone’s comments gives credence and weight to the issue we’ve all been facing.

I’m going to give it another try tonight or tomorrow but so far it doesn’t work for me. To say that was disappointing is a huge understatement. We’ll see tomorrow

I had exactly your experience. That is, it worked perfectly almost every time with Google Maps (haven't yet tried it with Apple Maps), but one time there was a very brief delay at the start of a direction, couldn't have been more than 1/2 second, and I did miss the first word. Not nearly as bad as the problem before the sometimes fix in 14.5.6. This happened only once in about 25 different directions. So, I remain hopeful that the problem has been solved.

Wow. ! Thank you everyone and especially Beatrice 57.

I'm going to offload the new 14.6 now & after all this discussion I'm going to have to drive someplace tomorrow just so I could use an application and check.

so exciting, but sad that I'm excited for something that I had for years.

weird!!

regardless thank you to everybody and thank you to Beatrice and fingers crossed.

Hi: Has some time so I started looking at some of the apps in Bluetooth on my phone. I clicked on Settings > Privacy > then Bluetooth. There were several apps there but not Google Maps or Apple Maps. I had installed Waze a while ago ( to see if that worked (which it didn't) however Waze was there and turned on (green indicator).  Being green Waze was an app that had requested the ability to use Bluetooth.  So I took my car out for a ride and used Waze.  To my surprise I could hear all the directions. Then I tried Apple and Google Maps and still could not hear all the directions .  I came home and then I clicked on "Settings" and just scrolled down to where all the apps are listed.  Clicked on Waze and under the "Allow (app name) to access" Bluetooth was an option (along with Location, Siri and Search, Notifications, Background App Refresh), and the indicator was green - on.  For Apple and Google Maps there was no such option for Bluetooth.

Could anyone who has had success with Apple or Google Maps please let me know if your Apple and Google Maps apps have the same settings as mine?

I had not updated to Beatrice57 (aka 14.6) as maps had begun to work for me after my long distance trip and many changes in settings - with alternating times during the trip when maps did and did not work. I am updating to 14.6 now and will see how that goes. However, Beatrice, did want you to know that my settings have been the same as yours. Expert person noted that he had navigprompts wake device on. It is off on my phone, so that likely confirms his belief that is not relevant to this issue. I will go for a ride later and see what 14.6 does or doesn’t do for me.
