iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

No noticeable difference in the way Bluetooth holds connection before and after 14.0. My 2014 BMW only allows Bluetooth for hands free calls, not music or anything else. That’s why driving directions are disguised as phone calls. The difference is that before 14 the Bluetooth connection was always “live”. Post 14 it is in standby until a call awakens it. That takes a few seconds, which accounts for the missing first few seconds of the directions.

I"m almost embarrassed to say that I've just been for a test drive and mine is still working (on 14.5.1) with no truncated messages on Apple Maps and, I assume, Google Maps. I can actually watch on the car screen that the handsfree call is being set up a second before the message starts. That was not the case before 14.5.1.

Beatrice, you may have found a difference that is significant in your last post. Although you and I have the same settings, my phone behaves differently in the car. For me, there has been no change to the way bluetooth connects since iOS 14. With my (previously paired) iPhone 7 I always got in the car with phone in pocket and drove off without touching the car systems and both phone and directions worked (With delay before 14.5.1).

If I am going to use Maps from home I have to set it up before I go out to the car as there is mobile 'black spot' within about ¼ mile of the house. I then press 'Go' in the car to start directions. If there is a decent mobile signal I can ask Siri to give me directions and he (He's a 'he' on my phone) will start Maps and directions and it works fine (since iOS 14.5.1) even if the I have not used bluetooth since I got in the car.

Now I must eat crow, sort of. Yesterday was the first chance I had to test 14.5.1 with my BMW and the delay was still there on Google maps. Today I tested with Apple Maps and it worked without any missing directions. Now here’s the weird part: I tested again with Google Maps and it, too, worked perfectly. I made no change in any settings except to turn Bluetooth off and then back on again. So in an odd sort of way 14.5.1 appears to have fixed things at least for now.

Thank you for all the updates. I am pretty good with technology. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I also have a 2019 Lexus. Everything new & bluetooth always work in this lexus & our 2016 Lexus, until I updated my phone. I've tried the audio button, it doesn't make a difference. Last night the command was " In 60 feet" , I really didn't know if I was to go Left or right. The audio setting in Apple maps has been retained, since I pressed it. All I can say is " APPLE YOU BROKE IT-- PLEASE FIX IT!!!"

This past weekend, I posted that suddenly both Apple and Google maps were working for me and the sequence that I thought had happened with bluetooth audio, podcasts, maps suddenly working and maps even working with the radio at the end of my trip. Unfortunately, I don't see the post here!??? Today I was excited when I got in the car, expecting a maps app to work, only to be disappointed. Here is the scenario from today as it is becoming clearer to me that the sequencing of connections is key to what is happening.

Start car and phone is charging.

Audio system says FM, and car radio is working

Neither Apple Maps nor Google Maps works

Switch to car audio Bluetooth setting

Music downloaded from on the phone plays fine through Bluetooth

Goggle maps doesn't work at all...no audio

Apple Maps worked

Google maps still not working

Stopped the music but didn't change the Bluetooth setting (but wondering if ending the music disconnected Bluetooth)

Apple Maps not working

Change audio system to FM radio

Apple Maps working

Google Maps working

Bang on the horn, hit my head on the steering wheel, and say this is NUTS! Can't play this sequencing guessing game every time I drive the car :(

Interesting post DSYinNC.

Sorry to say I have none of those problems.... I'm no expert and my phone is working fine now, but I'm interested.

If you get in the car with all the audio systems off and your phone in your pocket what happens if someone rings you? Does it come through the car systems or ring on the phone?

For me, that's the point. Maps has always worked correctly if the phone is already connected to bluetooth e.g. if I'm listening to music from the phone via bluetooth to the car speakers.

If everything is off and I get a call the phone wakes the car system up via bluetooth and after the call it goes back to off. Maps uses this same 'phone call' system but if music is off e.g. when I'm lost in a new town and having to concentrate or talking to someone in the car, the delay was in waking up the car systems from off.

From your post it sounds as if in your car you are having to maintain a constant connection and the problem is in setting up that permanent connection in the first place.

My phone works fine when I'm playing John Cage's 4'33 sec "silent" audio track (yes I actually paid $1.29 to download a silent audio track because of this problem) AND select Bluetooth as my audio source. BUT the second I go back to FM I'm right back to the delay/pause, etc. This never happened before iOS 14 - and that's no coincidence.

Another call with Apple. I have a feeling I know how this will end, for me anyway. Apple has seen this thread and that people that have installed 14.5.1 have seen success, and the maps apps, after they installed 14.5.1work without the pause/delay. They didn't have to do a thing and whatever "fix" was in 14.5.1 helped a lot of people. Which means, as far as I'm concerned, they are still looking at fixing my problem but, in their words, it is like "looking for a needle in a haystack".

I have another call on this Friday.

I am very happy for all the people who got the maps apps to work - just wish I was one of them :)

Theoretically this shouldn’t make any difference, but I have had luck and some improvement with Google maps by turning Bluetooth off on my iPhone, then turning it right back on. I’m not deleting the Bluetooth connection or anything like that, just literally turning the Bluetooth switch off and then back on on the iPhone. That seems to get rid of the delay at least for a while. At least some of the time. Not sure yet whether this is a permanent fix; I’m still playing around with it.

Beatrice,

I am so sorry you can't get yours working. As I said before, I was embarrassed to sign of my 'ticket' knowing that it was your efforts that got Apple to fix it but that yours still wasn't working. The guy I spoke to did promise to talk to whoever you're talking to to compare notes and see if they could learn anything from each other.

As you say, the team is looking at this post but they are not 'techies' and do not have the clearance to know what is actually going on inside 14.5.1 or any other Apple system. Having working for IT companies before I retired some years ago, this is normal practice... we just need to help 'our' guys pass on the most detail we can to the 'techies'!

Cheers,

Andy

Colin,

Mine has been working fine but all my tests have been on local trips close to home.

When you say 'works for short periods' does that mean that if you set off on a longer trip it starts working and then stops during that trip? Or do you mean it works for a couple of trips and then stops for the next trip?

If it's the former then I need to do some more tests on my system!

Andy

You all might be interested in my recent email to my Apple Support Advisor:

Hey Rich, Although my iPhone Bluetooth connection to my BMW with respect to map driving directions is now working properly, I do think that Apple should still be doing more than it did in 14.5.1 to correct the bug it introduced in 14. If you look at the comments in Apple Support you will see that the “fix” in 14.5.1 is erratic at best. While it seems to work for some users it doesn’t work at all for others. In my own case the first time I tried Apple Maps under 14.5.1 the problem remained exactly as before. The next time I tested it the problem vanished, but since I had changed nothing between the first test and the second it suggests that some instability remains. Other users have similarly reported on-again, off-again results which they are attempting to explain in various nonsensical ways. So, some aspect of the problem remains. While you as a support advisor may have no better explanation for why this is happening than the rest of us, surely there are software engineers at Apple who worked on iOS 14 and therefore know exactly what is causing this problem. They may not want to fix it, but they must certainly know how. If there is any way you could call this to the attention of those engineers and get them to fix it, that would be much appreciated by us consumers who have been struggling with this issue for many months. Thanks again for your help.
