iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

To all who had the "logging" "monitoring" installed as a profile did Apple ever give you a reason or setting that would explain the first few words of directions not being spoken? I hope to complete my logging tomorrow and will post back if I'm able to complete the logging.

I realize we have already, many times over, given them the reason, pause when a call comes into a vehicle, but I've never heard that said to me.

Not quite saying it out loud, but my Apple “advisor” repeated my words when he acknowledged that iOS places Bluetooth on “standby” when there is no call or music and then when a call comes in becomes “active” after a few seconds delay. That’s it! And of course Apple’s engineers and curious advisors know all about it.

I updated Today to IOS 14.5.1. I have an iPhone 12 max pro.

went out tonight same problem. I had a friend in the car tonight and I was showing her and she said how do you know we're supposed to go left or right, b/c it only said TURN.

Im happy for those who the update seemed to work for you, I am totally as to why some & not others??

Just a guess, but may have to do with obscure HFP settings that can only be made and changed when Bluetooth is connected via an app such as Apple Maps. That would explain why after update to 14.5.1 some phones work and some dont.

This is true. I cannot see a way to set up directions via the car in Apple Maps unless I'm sitting in the car and then it offers me the car as an option. I think I also had to have a destination set up and directions started too before I could access this.

I've now completed tests in both my wife's and my cars on 14.5.1 (iPhone 7) and it's working fine. I nearly said 'working perfectly' but sometimes it still seems to miss a tiny bit of the instructions: 'At the roundabout' comes out as '...t the roundabout'. I'd say it's perfectly usable now, but if Apple have introduced a delay of, say, 1 second, they should have made it 1.2 seconds!

I'm sorry for those whose phones are still not working (and I'm very interested to know why it's some and not all) but I will have to report to Apple in out planned call tomorrow that my phone is working fine.

Google maps is also working now.

Settings are similar and although you can find them from iPhone Settings it's easier with a destination set up and navigation started. Then you can swipe up from the bottom and you find 'Settings' at the bottom.

To be honest when I just did that I found that 'Play as a Bluetooth phone call' was turned off which surprised me as it was working as a bluetooth call this afternoon. It may be that the settings are different in the car with bluetooth enabled but in the middle of the night and after a glass of wine I'm not going out to the car to check now!

I'll check in the morning and repost but if it doesn't work one way try the other.

Thanks amayson: I have the same settings and mine is not working. Another day, another call with Apple. Another recording, more diagnostics, etc., etc. They will get back to me next week and I'll definitely post with what they said.

Really strange that some phones work and others don't.

If I have to start changing some settings after I put the destination in , I might as well use the navigation in my car. Then there's no problem.

I'm going to try it tomorrow, I usually use Google maps, I put in the name of the restaurant or place I'm going in Google and it comes right up in the maps and I hit directions.

let's see what happens.

Hi Beatrice,

I agree - really strange that some phones work and some don't when they are apparently set up the same.

One thing to check: apparently there are slightly different versions of releases. On my iPhone7, if I go Settings> General> About and tap on 14.5.1 it expands to 14.5.1 ( 18E212). Is yours the same?

What news of your contacts with Apple? I had to agree to close my 'ticket' as both Apple Maps and Google Maps are working 99% right for me. I was a bit reluctant to do that knowing that you still have a problem.

Obviously Apple were ultra careful not to let slip any personal information but I know that the team that is contacting us reads this discussion and is aware that your issue is not fixed yet.

I say the issue is only 99% fixed because, as someone else mentioned, it's still not perfect when there are two instructions very close together. Looking at the screen in my car is seems that if a new instruction is trying to open the Bluetooth connection while the previous instruction is trying to close it, there is a tiny delay. It is quite usable. I guess that even Apple can't have a connection open and closed at the same time so I forgive them that!

I'm waiting to hear back from them on Tuesday from the "diagnostics"/monitoring" done this week. I'm hopeful but I don't expect them to have found anything that would fix the issue. That's great that your navigation apps work 99% and honestly, I'm happy that you've got it back and working.

Hi all

are you all OK now with Apple and Google maps not having a delay in commands?

I was out late last night, I thought it was fixed but no. I missed two turns on Apple Maps, then I went onto Google maps same thing silly want to second delay not giving you the first part of the command.

Please let me know if anybody's come up with a solution that we haven't tried yet.

or if Apple has given you any information that would be helpful in the near future

14.5.1 did not do it for me either. All my settings conform to those who claim the problem has been solved, but clearly it hasn’t been. I’m awfully tired of Apple’s pretending to offer customer care when in reality they are only going through the motions. Obviously the engineers at Apple who injected this delay in 14.5 know exactly what causes the problem and could reverse what they did then. But they don’t want to.

The pause makes perfect sense but do you think that before 14.0 when you got in the car with your phone previously paired to the car the Bluetooth connection was established and held? After 14.0 you had to select Bluetooth on your audio system or start navigation Then you have to wait until The connection is made. Just a thought.
