iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

The Apple rep called again and told me to remove the Bluetooth monitoring. I did that (and updated to 14.5.1) and it is still working for me. (I only use Apple Maps so I didn't test Google Maps.) I don't know why or how but on my phone - XS Max - and with my car - 2018 Prius - I now have a working HFP (i.e., phone call simulation) voice nav guidance that works as it used to with over-the-air and satellite radio.

Hi jfalick: I'm really very happy that you've got maps working in your car!! I spent 1 1/2 hours with Apple and I'm no further towards a solution than when I started. When you say "Bluetooth monitoring" do you mean Apple had you run "Analytics" and send them to Apple, or did you do something different? If you did something different could you please share what it was?

Thanks and I'm glad someone finally broke through!! I have another call with them tomorrow and I'm sure one after that, and one after that, etc. etc.

Apple called and asked me to install 14.5.1. Maps seems to be working fine now with no delay. However I noticed the display doesn’t have the “end route” button on the screen unless you swipe up. I told Apple guy that I preferred to have it on the main screen, so there is less time looking at the screen. He agreed and said he would make note of it. Will have to wait for next update/bug fix for that to be changed.

I just uploaded logging files to Apple.

They will get back to me when they review them.

Note, when I started GM with BT call connection using 14.5.1 I still had the same issue.

When I started the screen recording the driving instructions no longer went through my radio speakers but through only my phone speaker. Instructions were complete though.

looks like a fix is still required.

Kudos for Tracy at Apple Support for walking me through this.

Great to see everyone still pursuing this. I have always been able to get full directions through the phone speaker if not connected to Bluetooth. BTW, I forgot to mention that when I went through the paces with Apple this morning, I actually got in my car and did some "tests" with the car running, turning on directions, and something installed on the phone by Apple to see if it would make a difference. Apple was on and off the phone with me as we did this. Sadly, no progress but they will have second my second live action in the logs.

I continue to read all of our posts & am in total disbelief.

I drove tonight & was on Google maps & the telephone through Bluetooth, the directions were coming through as they used to. Unbelievable! Obviously because Bluetooth was operating continuously without Delay..

it's just wrong that Apple is using their money & time & our time.

All they need to do is to get in a car, drive it & use the navigation apps.

stop sending everyone on a wild goose chase. Stop making people sit in their cars for an hour or 45 minutes, they could sit there for 45 hours. Apple you know what the problem is please fix it.

I too have had the call from Apple Care... nice guy concerned to help. We're going to run some tests on Thursday.

I believe the bluetooth monitoring software people have been asked to use establishes a bluetooth connection and monitors it, so Maps voice directions will work fine. If it were to monitor setting up the hands free call linked to when Maps starts 'talking' it would see the 2 second gap.

Anyway, my contact is going to do a test when he goes to get lunch... first making sure than nothing maintains an ongoing bluetooth link to the car. Maybe we'll have a new member of this discussion this afternoon!

I'm very glad maps is working for you. I tried 14.5.1 with the Apple rep on the phone yesterday and it was no help. I just went to a lab, 1 hour ago, used Apple Maps and still had the problem. I too have an iPhone 8. Ugh.

Unfortunately I'm afraid your good news is no so good for people who still have the problem. I'm sure Apple has, or will see, that the problem is corrected on some devices with no fixes put in place by them, e.g., bluetooth monitoring module, 14.5.1, etc. This may reinforce to them that no fix needs to be made from their side.

I have another call with them in less than an hour so I'll see how that goes.

Hi All,

I downloaded iOS 14.5.1 yesterday and after a call from the Apple Rep today went for a test drive in my wife's car. Apart from one minor glitch where the message seemed a bit garbled in Apple Maps the directions were fine, just like they were before iOS14 came along. I drove out using Apple Maps and back using Google and both were fine.

The rep did nothing to the phone, just asked about my experiences and arranged a call for Thursday, so the only thing that's changed is 14.5.1. I have to go out in my car tomorrow so I'll test that then, but I expect it will work and they both stopped working together.

As a long term follower of this discussion... I might have even started it... this is very confusing. I don't understand why some people have the problem and some don't. If it checks out in my car tomorrow I'll record all the settings I have on my iPhone 7 and list them here.

Another call with Apple today. Installed the "Bluetooth logging" started Apple Maps and then "captured" what was happening. While "capturing" I heard all the directions. I'm convinced the "capturing" initiated the bluetooth connection and that's why all the directions were spoken. Once i stopped the "capturing" back to the directions missing the first few words.

Another call tomorrow.
