iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

Hi All and especially to Beatrice whose initiative seems to have got this moving... hopefully.

As requested by Beatrice I have written to my Apple Support person to resurrect my original case raised back in November 2020 shortly after iOS14 came out.

I've asked him to link the case and the discussion in Apple's systems. I had already sent him the link to the discussion back in December.

I'm not sure if Apple can formally link a discussion and a case but if the Apple people reading this discussion can look the case up they will see that this was escalated to 'Engineering' way back last year with all kinds of tracking and recordings made on my phone at their request sent back to them.

I gave up chasing them when it wasn't fixed in 14.3 partly because I was obviously flogging a dead horse and partly because lockdown in the UK made it illegal to go anywhere I didn't know well already!! Both of those those reasons have now changed so keep chasing everyone!

Well! The moderator removed all the personal information from my last post including the name of the Apple person I spoke to and more importantly, the case number!!

In addition I've had a mail back from Apple support to say that my mail cannot be delivered to my contact. Since it was a generic email I sent it to it must be because the Case Number has expired!

Whats the good of that??

I only hope that the moderator sent the details on to Apple internally! In any case, to the Apple person that's reading this discussion: my first response from Apple about this case I can't send you was on 11th November 2020. It's been unsolved for a long time!

I received a call from Apple, too. I walked the agent through the problem and she sent me some Bluetooth monitoring program and asked me to use the app with the HFP / "phone call interruption" guidance on Apple Maps.

Well we used it for several different trips around our area and it worked perfectly. She called back and I reported that to her and she said she would check in again tomorrow. In the meantime, we went to a few more places using Apple Maps along the way. Worked perfectly.

I also tried it with Google Maps which I usually don't use anyway. It did not work. It didn't even try to make the "phone call." It might be something that I missed in Google Maps or the iOS setting, but I did double-check both and re-started the phone and Google Maps, too.

That said, Apple Maps is working for me as of today (Sunday, May 2)!

It is certainly progress that you were able to get Apple Maps to work without the few second delay/omission. I will fiddle around with the settings in both Apple Maps and Google Maps to see if I can replicate your success. Of course, iPhone worked fine with Google Maps and Bluetooth prior to iOS 14 update, so Apple should be able to get things back to where they were before that update. I'd be surprised if Apple's update has a way to work with Apple Maps but not with Google Maps in light of the anti-competitive aspect of that kind if thing.

Hi All.

I read the above post from JFAlick,

I believe that might be what they asked me to do to put the keyword in there was "monitoring".

I actually use Google maps message the time, it's a more friendly application to me. I hope Apple doesn't think that they can just do a workaround to make Apple Maps work. That would be horrible.

I hope we are making some headway with all these phone calls and reporting our issues to them.

i've probably said it before and I'll say it again, they broke it they can fix it.

be careful of "monitoring"

Hi JFAlick,

Thanks for the information.

I've tried to replicate what you say on my phone but I can't find anything that looks like HFP/"phone call interruption" on my phone. Can you post a bit more detail please?

It would also be interesting to know if you had anything else running (eg music) that kept the Bluetooth connection active.

Cheers.

Hi jfalick,

That's the same setting as everyone else uses when it doesn't work, so I'm very keen to understand what's different about your setup. Did Apple give you some additional software in your contacts with them or is there something in your system that maintains a permanent Bluetooth connection even if you're not using it?

None of us have a problem with voice prompts if there is already a Bluetooth connection between the phone and the car e.g. radio or music playing through the phone.

Hi jfalick: I assume you installed the "Bluetooth monitoring program" that Apple sent you, on your phone, and it's still on your phone, is that correct? If that's the case I'm wondering if the monitoring program starts and keeps the bluetooth connection in the car's audio. Did Apple give you any indication/reason why Maps worked after you were sent the monitoring program?

Thanks jfalick and I'm glad maps works in your car!

Of course, since we all know that iOS 14.5 did not fix the issue, unless there is some setting in iOS or Apple Maps or Google Maps, or some added app that keeps the Bluetooth active and not on standby, there is no reason why the problem would go away for most of us simply because some fellow posters seem to have done something or had something done to their iPhones that fixed things for them. If there is a setting change that we all can make, would someone please spell out exactly what it is. Otherwise I am afraid we will simply have to wait for Apple to decide to fix it for everyone in an update to iOS.

Received my follow up phone call from Apple. Confirmed that 14.5 does not solve the problem. Confirmed that if you are streaming music, the directions will come through fine. If you are using the radio, they do not. All of which had been outlined on this site, but I was willing to go through the process with them if it will help. They installed analytics and logs, collected the diagnostic info they needed, and then we uninstalled. The info will now be shared with the engineers. I inquired if it is only some models/older phones that are having this problem. Apple said no - it occurs with users who have various phone models, including some 12s. I was offered the opportunity to be connected to a senior engineer to troubleshoot my phone - which would include all the steps (including a reset! as already documented as not solving the problem) many folks on here have already taken, including myself...which the Apple rep seemed to confirm and acknowledge wasn't likely to do me any good! Needless to say, I turned down that invite which would be the equivalent of a waste of time (to me at least). The rep suggested I drive carefully, and that I consider streaming while driving and using maps. He asked if I would be willing to be contacted again if the engineers have additional questions/requests. I asked if he thought they would get this problem solved, and the answer was something like "you have our attention"; we are the group that handle odd things; and any fix would likely be in a future update. Let us see what experiences others have, and keep pressing ahead on this issue.

There is a thread on Macrumors going back to September 2020 that deals with this same problem and correctly traces the problem to the iOS 14 update and something called HFP prompts. But then, in a tantalizing way, the most recent posting states the following; "Apple maps didn't work too. But luckily I found the solution: After forgetting and reconnecting the bluetooth device, everything is working great (again)." I doubt this is really "the solution", but I thought I'd mention it for those on this thread who might be better able than I to make sense of it.
