iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

Hello everyone!! I had the same problem with the google map program delaying the voice instructions on my Bluetooth headset. I pair an iPhone & an iPad simultaneously to the headset & have finally figured out the solution!!!!

Someone earlier wrote that you must

Turn “play as Bluetooth phone call”off on google map settings.

After 2 years of talking to Apple, Plantronics & my company IT, this solution worked for me.

All my music is on my iPhone and when I listen to music in the car via bluetooth I have no problem with Apple or Google maps because the phone and the car are already connected by Bluetooth. However, I don't always want to listen to music, especially when I'm lost or in a new town and that's when the problem happens, exactly when I need it most!

The suggested fixes are appreciated but seem to be the equivalent of a yoga pose that involves all 4 limbs doing something that doesn't come naturally...in my case, the fixes don't work either. This wouldn't seem to be an earth shattering problem, so I am thinking that the folks at Apple and/or Google just are not interested, unfortunately. Similar to my recent experience at the so-called Genius Bar for another device.

I have iPhone XR, IOS 14.4.1 and 2018 Lexus RX350. When using Apple Map or Google Map, the first a few words of direction voice are cut off. Someone explained it is bc bluetooth is idling when the Map is making no voice. When the Map makes voice, it takes ~2 seconds for BT to be activated, so the first words are silent. The issue can be fixed by Apple or Google. Unfortunately it has not happened yet.

At mean time, I just worked around.

A) Use iPhone speaker. It is not perfect since volume and sound quality is low, but it is still better than a few words cut off. Sometimes, like some people mentioned, there is no sound from iPhone speaker at all, it is likely because BT of phone is not turned off completely. If you turn off BT by using iPhone Control Center, it just turns it off temporarily. When you restart the car, or plug USB cable to your iPhone, BT would turn on automatically without noticing you, then no sound comes from phone speaker anymore. Thus you have to go to iPhone Setting --> Bluetooth -->Off to completely turn it off.

or B) Connect USB cable to my car so communication between phone and car is through the cable, not BT. I do it anyway since I like to have my phone charged while driving. Remember to change car setting on audio input from BT to your phone. In this way, you can use car speakers for the Map voice and also can listen to music from your phone. No any words missing!

Hope it helps.

Has anybody tried getting Google-Maps to update the app so that if you are using the play as a phone call over Bluetooth feature it waits a couple seconds to start the directions? Google could fix this too, though obviously it is yet another problem with Apple updating their operating system. Just like 14 screwed up email, it screws up this too. I wish they would stop “improving“ IOS.

I have and iPhone 8 with the same problem as described in this thread. After umpteen chats and phone calls to Apple "support" I was told by Apple "support" to go to a "Genius Bar" so I went to one yesterday. Their suggestion was to reset the iPhone 8 to it's factory settings and set it up as new i.e., to NOT from a backup. Then just install Apple Maps and try it. Has anyone tried this and if so did it work?

My workaround, which will not work for many people, is my hearing aids. They are "paired" to my phone (I control the program, volume, etc. right from the iPhone 8) and the bluetooth connection is steady. When in the car and I start Google or Apple Maps, with my hearing aids on, NO words are dropped. My hearing aids work for this because a bluetooth connection between the phone and the aids is running. This, to me anyway, confirms what many other people have said, there is a "lag" in the bluetooth connection when Apple or Google Maps goes to speak that causes the initial and ongoing problem with directional instructions. I

I don't think Apple takes this issue seriously at all and I don't see any plans they have to address this issue.
