Apple Watch - Walkie Talkie - New Conversation, my iPhone starts ringing!

iPhone 8 Plus – iOS 14.1

Apple Watch 5 – WatchOS 7.02

I have recently updated my iPhone OS to 14.1

When someone in my Walkie Talkie contacts starts a new conversation

with me, my iPhone rings like an incoming call. On the iPhone is says the Contact

Name and under it  “(null) Audio” then

when I wake up my Apple Watch on the iPhone it has a Green Status Bar up top

with a telephone hand piece next to a padlock.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Same issue. Really odd. Some observations:

it works as expected when the phone is not connected.

if the phone is connected, sometimes it rings like a normal call. Other times it wont be it actually starts an active call (the green phone icon appears on the top left). If you select it opens the phone app with the call but then immediately shows call cancelled. I wonder if that was the case always and now with the privacy changes it is logging the call?

Also, I’ve tried the following, none of which resolved the issue:

  1. turn devices on and off
  2. delete FaceTime and walkie talkie apps
  3. signed out of AppleID
  4. Erase and unpair Watch, then restore from backup. (I didn’t want to setup Watch as new just yet. Too much work to get all settings back in place.
  5. deleted and re-added Walkie Talkie contacts

I can confirm that my partner’s iPhone XS and Watch series 5 does not exhibit this issue.

I can confirm that if the iPhone screen is asleep, the phone won’t ring when someone else initiated Walkie Talkie. But if the phone screen is awake, it will ring once if someone else initiates the Walkie Talkie

I was having the exact same issue. Updating to iOS 14.3 Public Beta 2 from iOS 14.2 fixed the problem completely.

This is wonderful to hear!!

Let's hope iOS 14.3 will soon be released.

If you scanned the notes for iOS 14.3 Public Beta 2 (or any public beta version of iOS 14.3) does it mention anything about Walkie Talkie or FaceTime audio bugs?

iOS 14.2.1 seems to fix this.

Fingers crossed!!

You seem to be right! I downloaded iOS 14.2.1 and initial testing seems to have indicated this has been fixed.

If this update did fix this issue, then . . .

. . . I wish that the Senior support person I talked to for like 2 hours a few days ago would have done his homework. I was one of three or so calls related to this issue that I made to AppleCare. My last call was to see if the team could ascertain if Apple Engineers have acknowledged this issue and that at some point it would be fixed, because then I wouldn't bother with signing in and out of AppleID, etc.

The Senior support person was not cooperative. He didn't check his sources to see what he could find. I know they have databases like that because years ago when I had a different issue, the support person said they're checking to see if my issue was acknowledged. And after much digging while I was on the phone, she acknowledged that the issue is documented, no workaround is available yet. Oh well...!
