Mac OS Upgrade Not Successful

Issue as per subject.
iMac
21.5-inch, Mid 2011
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
I go to the apple support page to download the OS X El Capitan the file name is InstallMacOSX.dmg and the file size is 6.2GB. I double click to run the dmg file and showing install program successful, but the Mac OS it still the same.
Storage status is Macintosh HD 448.1 GB free Out of 499.25 GB
Your assistance/advice will be much appreciated.
