20-inch Apple Cinema Display screen flashing on and off when connected via adaptor to Mac Pro 2019

I have a multi-screen setup for my new mac pro, moving over from my mac pro-2013. Two displays work perfectly and I finally got my adaptor for the 20-inch (metal) apple cinema display, DVI to USB-C. I plugged it in and the screen is registering and it displays beautifully, but then the screen flashes on and off. The screen is visible for 2 seconds then its black for 7 seconds in a loop. Sometimes this causes my main monitor connected via HDMI to also flicker for a second. The display options show the monitor and all the display settings. Ive tried getting dust out of the connector and restarting the machine with no luck. Do I need a different connector or is the display simply not compatible with the new Mac Pro?

I’m seeing the exact same thing with an iMac 2020 model that has an AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8GB. Tried the 20” Apple Cinema Display with the same adapter (DVI to USB-C) on a 13” MacBook Pro 2017 model and it works flawlessly. System Info shows the correct display information and the System Preferences/Displays shows that it’s there also in the arrangement tab.
