I solved this and the inability to print by following these steps exactly:

Go to 123.hp.com

Do NOT put in your printer type, instead use the "My device is not listed" link. This takes you to a more generalized tool to download.

Click the Download button. The application "HP Easy Start" version 2.9.3 will download.

Open this app... do NOT go beyond the first screen. Instead, look under the HP Easy Start menu next to the Apple menu, and select and choose "Uninstall HP Software..."

This launches the Uninstaller. Click Continue. Then it takes quite a while to remove all HP files.

When it's done, there is a button to relaunch HP Easy Start, called "Set Up New Device". Click that.

This time "Agree" and hit the Continue button. Make sure of the listed things on the next screen and click Continue.

Select your printer (mine is a printer on the network, it just shows up by its name, e.g. "Anubis") and click Continue.

Click "Install" in the next panel. The 'essential' software is downloaded, and permission must be given to proceed with installing.

Installation seems to take a long time. When it is done click Continue.

At this point you can set up Status and Alerts. I don't know what happens if you do, I just skipped that step by clicking Continue.

In the next panel, click "Add Device..." button. That doesn't take long. Then click "Print Test Page".

If you are lucky like me that page prints. Click Continue. Next is to set up online access things. I didn't really want that, so when I clicked the "Continue Online..." button I did NOT click the "Register My Printer" button in the web page that opened. You might want to.

I confirmed that printing from an app actually works, and then restarting the computer did NOT result in the "damage" warning.

YAY.

Worked on a Catalina iMac and a Mohave MacBook Air.

Unfortunately the HP Easy Start procedure did not work for me because my software could not be located on the HP site. My guess is that my printer HP DeskJet 6940 is quite old (perhaps 15 years or so) but still works well (of course not after today). So I think HP has not updated the driver or may not update the driver. I am using a generic HP Deskjet driver that works minimally. Color but no additional features. Weʻll see what happens on HPʻs end. 😬

Hi Rolaa, This is what I see when I try to find the third folder. Is that normal? LaunchAgents shows com.microsoft.update.agent.plist as the most recently added (Oct. 14, 2020), LaunchDaemons shows com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist as the most recently added (Oct. 14, 2020). Next most recent is com.adobe.fpsaud.plist added Sept. 25, 2020. Should I delete the most recent com.microsoft.... plists? They don't seem relevant to HP devices. Why is this happening on Oct. 23, 2020 for so many? macOS Catalina 10.15.7 MacBook Pro.

No, that doesn't work either. I directly connected the MacBook Pro to the printer via USB cable and this time the HP Easy Start "saw" the printer. I set up the printer but I still cannot print: It tells me that the printer is offline (although it is directly connected to the MacBook Pro), or "looking for the printer" but never find it. I"ll give up!

Hi tcmeyers. I tried the technique of renaming com.hp.devicemonitor.plist to com.hp.devicemonitor.plist.old (as suggested by van233 9:51 AM), then tried to print a test page on my wirelessly connected LaserJet Pro MFP M125 nw. I now see

as the persistent popup. At least the offending file name in the message changed. I will now try your technique explained in your 2:25 PM message.

Hi tcmeyers. Yes, everything was done precisely as you describe in your 2:25 PM message. When I reached the step

"Select your printer (mine is a printer on the network, it just shows up by its name, e.g. "Anubis") and click Continue."

I received the "No devices have been found" after the HP Easy Start app spent a minute or so looking. I have seen that before in my MacBook Pro with HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125nw system. Normally I just add the printer with the Internet Printing Protocol, and everything works fine. It seems something is seriously wrong in the HP printer - macOS ecosystem, at least for my system.

I followed your steps. But HP will not provide any driver for my Printer (HP LaserJet CP2025). I can reinstall the Printer in the Systempreferences, Apple will provide a new driver an it installs as it should.

But I still can’t print, there’s not output on the printer (wether when connected to the network nor when connected to USB).

Hi tcmeyers. That would be nice to try, but no HP Printer Software Update 5.1 is available. Software Update in System Preferences says "Your Mac is up to date -- macOS Cataline 10.15.7". The App Store says I have 4 updates, but these are for Keynote, Numbers, Pages, iMovie which I don't use regularly. Maybe an HP Printer Software Update 5.1 will appear in the near future. Fingers crossed.

Thank you. This worked for me to get rid of the popup. I am a Brother Printer family, so printing was never an issue. However when I visit my brother-in-law in NYC (I'm in the SF Bay Area), I occasionally have to use his HP printer but I guess I'll have to deal with that when I see him again (which may not be until at least next April due to COVID). I did download the HP Smart app to reinstall anything that might be necessary to use an HP printer then.

Initially, I tried removing the offending file, but that prompted the HP Software 5.1 update (which looks like a 2018 update!) and the problem returned.

From the consensus, this appears to be an Apple/HP issue. Hopefully, it will be a non-issue with a *soon* to be issued software update.

Indeed, HP does not have print drivers that work for older printers. On an early 2016 MacBook, Catalina 10.15.7, I tried to print Friday on an HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless E709n. It failed to print, and the HP print manager had the message “One or more components of the HP printing software are corrupted or missing. The print job cannot be completed. To fix this situation, HP recommends reinstalling the print driver software.” The printer worked on Thursday. I downloaded HP Easy Start, but it said HP did not have drivers for my printer. I restarted Easy Start and used it to uninstall HP software. I went to support.hp.com, found and downloaded Mac Printer Driver 5.1 which shows a release date of August 4, 2020. When I tried to open the install package, I received a message that the package was signed with a certificate that has expired. I had the installation continue. The printer still does not print and gives the same error message.

To be quite honest Apple and HP are premium brands, they have messed this us and they should put a fix in place. Apple used to be a byword for ‘it just works’, please just sort it don’t expect the users to delete half of perfectly safe software and then have to spend the afternoon recovering from Apples and HP’s mistakes.

I buy these products so that if I do have to work a weekend I don’t have to spend it wasting my time getting frustrated with tech that should be there to help me not hinder me!
