I solved this and the inability to print by following these steps exactly:
Go to 123.hp.com
Do NOT put in your printer type, instead use the "My device is not listed" link. This takes you to a more generalized tool to download.
Click the Download button. The application "HP Easy Start" version 2.9.3 will download.
Open this app... do NOT go beyond the first screen. Instead, look under the HP Easy Start menu next to the Apple menu, and select and choose "Uninstall HP Software..."
This launches the Uninstaller. Click Continue. Then it takes quite a while to remove all HP files.
When it's done, there is a button to relaunch HP Easy Start, called "Set Up New Device". Click that.
This time "Agree" and hit the Continue button. Make sure of the listed things on the next screen and click Continue.
Select your printer (mine is a printer on the network, it just shows up by its name, e.g. "Anubis") and click Continue.
Click "Install" in the next panel. The 'essential' software is downloaded, and permission must be given to proceed with installing.
Installation seems to take a long time. When it is done click Continue.
At this point you can set up Status and Alerts. I don't know what happens if you do, I just skipped that step by clicking Continue.
In the next panel, click "Add Device..." button. That doesn't take long. Then click "Print Test Page".
If you are lucky like me that page prints. Click Continue. Next is to set up online access things. I didn't really want that, so when I clicked the "Continue Online..." button I did NOT click the "Register My Printer" button in the web page that opened. You might want to.
I confirmed that printing from an app actually works, and then restarting the computer did NOT result in the "damage" warning.
YAY.
Worked on a Catalina iMac and a Mohave MacBook Air.
I did all the steps and downloaded the HP Easy Start and got this message "Safari can’t open the file “HP Easy Start” because the file is still being downloaded." NOW WHAT
DOWNLOAD DRIVERS FROM HTTPS..... AND WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN IT I GOT THIS MESSAGE "Safari can’t open the file “HP Easy Start” because the file is still being downloaded." I AM SO FRUSTRATED!!!
Thank you for all the kind help. My IMac and hope is ok for me, except printing in gmail only get right 1/2 of page. I can get around that so will leave it alone.

This worked great and my printer is working too. Many thanks.
Worked like a charm!! After you uninstall you can get rid of that annoying error message before reinstalling the software.
Yes. That is what I found. Printer is working. Scanner is not working. Apparently, after reinstalling the HP Printer this doesn't include the appropriate scanner software.
This did not work for me, I have Catalina 10.15.7
Hallelujah, musicbubba!
Mac printing was down October 23 to November 23. Had to route print jobs through the PC. Mac is back in business!
I cant print with any of my previously installed printer because of the message
This worked for me. And since I did not want/need to Set Up New Device, I stopped after the un-install step. Restarted my computer and the warning message was gone. Thank you.
The fix from tcmeyers worked great for me. Thanks for taking the time.
As I reported several pages ago, I resolved the HP problem while in Catalina. I then upgraded to Big Sur without incident.
Thanks, I like your method. I am ok now.
For some who ask Apple then a couple of updates ‘Cooks the Coose’’
thanks all

What to do to avoid damaging of my computer ???
Uh oh, so this may make the problem re-occur if the macOS is upgraded to Big Sur? That is not good.
