I solved this and the inability to print by following these steps exactly:

Go to 123.hp.com

Do NOT put in your printer type, instead use the "My device is not listed" link. This takes you to a more generalized tool to download.

Click the Download button. The application "HP Easy Start" version 2.9.3 will download.

Open this app... do NOT go beyond the first screen. Instead, look under the HP Easy Start menu next to the Apple menu, and select and choose "Uninstall HP Software..."

This launches the Uninstaller. Click Continue. Then it takes quite a while to remove all HP files.

When it's done, there is a button to relaunch HP Easy Start, called "Set Up New Device". Click that.

This time "Agree" and hit the Continue button. Make sure of the listed things on the next screen and click Continue.

Select your printer (mine is a printer on the network, it just shows up by its name, e.g. "Anubis") and click Continue.

Click "Install" in the next panel. The 'essential' software is downloaded, and permission must be given to proceed with installing.

Installation seems to take a long time. When it is done click Continue.

At this point you can set up Status and Alerts. I don't know what happens if you do, I just skipped that step by clicking Continue.

In the next panel, click "Add Device..." button. That doesn't take long. Then click "Print Test Page".

If you are lucky like me that page prints. Click Continue. Next is to set up online access things. I didn't really want that, so when I clicked the "Continue Online..." button I did NOT click the "Register My Printer" button in the web page that opened. You might want to.

I confirmed that printing from an app actually works, and then restarting the computer did NOT result in the "damage" warning.

YAY.

Worked on a Catalina iMac and a Mohave MacBook Air.

I had the same problem this morning. Following Rolaa's advice about looking in the "Library/LaunchAgents" file, I located the file entitled "com.hp.devicemonitor.plist". I don't believe the file is malware but rather there's an osx incompatibility problem at the moment that hopefully Apple will fix soon. My husband suggested I rename the file to prevent it's launch on start up. I've temporarily appended it to "com.hp.devicemonitor.plist.old". Once "plist" is not longer seen as the extension it doesn't launch. Once the incompatibility problem is resolved I can restore the original file name. I then restarted my Mac and I'm no longer getting the popup message.

Thanks for the suggestion: I'll try it but before doing that I downloaded from Apple the new update for HP Printers 5.1. THe good news is that those nasty messages about malware have disappeared, and it also looks as if it will start printing insofar as when I hit "Print" the icon of my HP printer briefly pops up in the dock ... but only briefly, and it quickly disappears wihtout printing!

I'm retired after 32 years in IT and I have no idea why the following corrected the issue for me:

After deleting the com.hp.devicemonitor.plist file from the ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder and moved it to trash (from the initial reported issue):

I went to "System Preferences" (on Macbook Pro) and selected "Printers/Scanners".

I highlighted my printer (one of two) that was broken from this issue, and clicked the "-" to remove it from the list.

I tried to manually add it back, but got a message saying "Error - cannot communicate with this printer at this time".

I launched a Microsoft Word document, clicked "File", "Print" and the printer dialogue box came up.

The printer I was having issues with was still in the list of "available" printers, so I chose it.

I successfully printed to the previously broken printer.

I went back to "System Preferences", "Printers/Scanners", and my previously broken printer I had removed was back in the list of available printers.

Someone smarter than me will have to explain why this worked.

Here's what I did to solve this PER the HP website;

1) Open Finder

2) Click the "GO" menu and select "Go to Folder"

3) paste "~/Library/LaunchAgents" in (do NOT omit the tilde "~" or else you go to the WRONG place)

4) Find "com.hp.devicemonitor.plist" and REMOVE it

5) Reboot - boom the problem is gone.

I'd update your HP Drivers & Software ASAP to be sure you're all groovy and such...

I also have an HP LaserJet CP2025 and I'm experiencing exactly your problem" I DID manage to get rid of those nasty "malware" messages by uninstalling all HP software, deleting the printer, and then adding it again, after which the new HP Printer 5.1 software was also installed (driver version 19.13): When I now try to print (wither through Tme Capsule or via direct USB connection to my MacBook Pro, everything seems at first fine: the print window opens, I click print, the HP icon shows up in the dock ... but than it says that the printer is offline and I cannot print.

I have two computers, both running the same version of iOS, though only one is experiencing HPDeviceMonitiring.framework symptoms as previously described. Both computers use the same printer. Both computer's folders were created September 15, 2017 at 1:58 am; however, the modified times are different. The non-working 27" iMac's framework folder was modified October 25, 2017 at 12:49 AM. The working MacBook Pro's file was modified a day and a half later, October 26, 2017 at 7:11 PM. Both folders are labeled as Version 5.37.1. Wonder if there is a difference in content......

Rolaa's solution appears to get rid of this error message for some people, others like myself find no "suspicious files" and for those that it does "work" for, it gets rid of the error message but yet they are still unable to print to their HP printer.

Like others, my problem suddenly appeared October 23, 2020. Nothing would print from my Mac, if I switch the printer to a PC, then it still prints like always. Then I started getting messages like "HPDeviceMonitoring.framework will damage your computer" anytime I attempted to print.

I have fixed my problem. No error message, printer works (and the printer is an HP 3030, 16 years old, drivers no longer available from HP website):

  1. Under System Preferences-> Printers and Scanners: remove the printer from the list by selecting the printer and pressing the "-" button.
  2. Open Finder, select Go > Go to Folder.
  3. Type: /Library/Printers/ and hit enter.
  4. Create a new folder called “Printers Content” and move everything from the Printers folder inside it. Now drag that folder to your Desktop.
  5. Reconnect your printer and try printing again:
    1. If it works: Move the “Printers Content” folder to the Trash.
    2. If it doesn’t work: Return the “Printers Content” folder to the Printers folder and empty it.

Hi guys,

You probably have hp utlities tools installed on you computer (Application > HP Folder)

HP provided an update yesterday.

Download HP Easy start app on HP web site.

Lanch App > Click on HP Easy start (Between Apple and File) > Uninstall

After uninstalling, reinstalling with HP Easy start will provide the last update and should solve the problem.

Hope this will work for y'all too.

Peace.

Hi Steve,

I have an older HP printer too, so Easy Start will not work in this case. What I have done is download the HP drivers from the Apple site at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . I then installed the drivers and added back the printer through Preferences>Printers & Scanners and it worked.

Note: I take the policy of always keeping the installation packages of the software that I installed successfully on my computer in a separate folder, so I can always revert to those "safe" versions. I went to check it and the driver version now available through the Apple support site is the same that I have installed previously, however, the installation certificate that comes within the package has been renewed, and that is what is really causing the problem. So, I recommend you download a fresh package from Apple even if you have the older one stored somewhere.
