itunes not detecting iphone 12

Hey guys, just got my iphone 12 (previous phone was iphone 8), but itunes is not detecting the iphone 12. I'm trying to transfer all the data, texts etc from the iphone 8 to 12 but whenever I connect the 12 to my windows PC it just doesn't detect in itunes. My PC detects it - I can see it in my files and it is in device manager, but itunes just doesn't recognise it. itunes is up to date with the latest version and it still detects my iphone 8 when I plug that in. I tried power cycling the phone and even uninstalling/re-installing itunes but no luck .. tried it in different USB ports as well which is the only thing which makes a slight difference. In one USB port its like it detects it for a brief moment then its gone, all other ports it never appears in itunes. But all my USB ports work perfectly fine with all other devices.

So I was hoping people may have any advice? Cheers :)

I have a few other lightning cables (mostly Apple branded) but my computer does not have a USB-C port on it. However, I was finally able to get it to work after connecting an Apple brand USB-A to Lightning cable directly to a USB 3.1 port on the back of my computer (directly connected to the motherboard). All other ports did not work, even though device manager was detecting the iPhone correctly and following the various reinstall recommendations did not work. Only the USB 3 port worked properly and I didn't have to restart everything - though of course in all my troubleshooting i did a number of restarts and reinstalls so it can't hurt if you restart your computer or iTunes as well.

Just for background, I've got an iPhone 12 Mini on iOS 14.3. The computer I'm trying to sync to is an AMD Ryzen 3 (Gigabyte B450M motherboard) running Windows 10 (with the latest Dec 2020 patches). I do not have a USB-C port on the computer anywhere, so the included cable is not particularly useful at the moment. Thanks for the discussion which helped me narrow down some things to try.

My PC also sees my iPhone 12 Pro Max but merely charges it and not a lot else. This is definitely not something we're going to fix ourselves and can only come about by way of an update.

I'll try my iPhone again tomorrow plugged into my PC after tonight's nondescript download through the Mac to see if that makes any difference. I'm not holding my breath, obviously.

I had no issues with the last OS, this has only been happening recently in Big Sur. However its not restricted to Big Sur. I can only get my phone to read on my newer iMac in a new user account I created when trying to fix another problem with Final Cut not opening. If the computer can read the phone under a new user then its clear there are some sort of files within the Library (at least for Mac, I dont know about PC nor do I care) that need to be found and removed. Its sort of a process of elimination at this point while Apple Techs dont have a clue themselves.

Oh my god, thank you so much! That solved it for me!

I really hope Apple will become aware of this problem with Ryzen platforms and provide a fix that doesn't rely on users getting the lucky idea to try out every single USB port of their mainboard until one eventually works.

I spent 2 hours with the apple support earlier this day because of this problem and they said there was no knowledge about compatibility issues with AMD Ryzen when I mentioned it.

I have the same problem. I tried everything that all help pages asked me to do. I spent time with apple support and they are telling me I may have defective computer. I am using new HP pro laptop. I am very disappointed in Apple support where they are not willing to solve the issue. It does connect with my 10 year old computer. So, apple is saying it is not phone issue. There is something with iphone12 or itunes which does not allow it to be recognized by itunes. Apple needs to pay attention to this.

Dear t0r

Many thanks for your response.

All the UK Apple stores are closed at the moment but was interesting to read your posts and I'll wait until the stores are open again before booking a Genius Bar appointment to request a replacement.

I've also managed to persuade iTunes to recognise my iPhone 12 Pro Max on my PC [no problem on my Mac] by an alternative method which is detailed on the last post of page 10 of this thread.
