Sleep Wake Failure in EFI on New 2020 iMac 27" Running Catalina

I just purchased a new 2020 iMac 27" running Catalina. Every time I leave the computer to sleep overnight, when I get up in the morning, it has crashed and I get the following error. I have tried to reset the SMC, and I have tried to change the setting in Energy Saver Settings, but it still crashes. It happens only when left for extended periods overnight. During the day, if I leave the computer for a long time, and come back, it wakes up from sleep mode just fine. It only happens overnight. I have an external Seagate back up Time Machine drive attached and nothing else. This is obviously a huge problem to have for a new iMac, and it's probably damaging everything from the software to the hardware every-time it crashes. Does anyone have any solve or input? I called tech support, we ran some reports and then we sent it to higher tech support, and they said they would get back to me in a few days. Please help if you have any advice or a fix. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm so disappointed that I'm about to return this thing. I just hope I didn't miss my return window. Much thanks.

You can save you and us a lot of time and effort of playing 20 questions if you do the following:

Please navigate to the Mac App Store or navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

So for the past 2 nights, the only box in Energy Saver I have on, is the "wake for network access", and it hasn't crashed overnight while in sleep mode. The computer has woken up from sleep just fine in the morning after having left it on overnight. So far, I don't know if this was a fix, or coincidence. But I will see and report back in a few days. Regardless, I know the computer shouldn't have a crash problem while in sleep mode, but maybe keeping the "wake for network access" to on, might have some temporary affect.

Yeah' there seems to be an issue somewhere between the iMac's new hardware and the macOS version updates.

Personally I would try running with all of the Energy Saver boxes unchecked, then select sleep from the Apple dropdown menu at the end of the day to see if that helps. If it does, then I might recheck the one(s) if needed.

That is good news, keep us posted.

I'm not sure why the average user would need "wake for network access" checked, unless you are accesses the iMac from a different location.

I have been making changes to Energy Saver, but I will try your recommendation. I thought that if I had Wake for network access to ON, it would actually be better as it wouldn't increase the chance of it going into full shutdown mode and causing a crash. Maybe having it on might actually be better. I had to off before and still had this problem.

In addition to running EtreCheck and posting that Report.

Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Energy Saver > uncheck the "Wake for network access" and "Enable Power Nap" boxes and test it for a couple of nights.

The advantage of Shutting Down is that the Mac clears out system temp, swap and cache files when booting up. Some system updates are installed automatically on boot up so routinely restarting your Mac is a good idea.

In order to run the maintenance routines that Macs run when left on all night is to keep it on one or two nights a week.

You can manually run the Maintenance scripts like this: using your Admin account, you can run all three maintenance scripts at once:

1. Open Terminal, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
2. At the Terminal prompt, type the following, exactly as written:
  1. sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
3. Press Return.
4. Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.

All three scripts will run in sequence. There is no visual feedback while the scripts execute. You will know they are completed when the Terminal prompt returns.

You can run a Terminal command to quickly check the date and time stamps of the log files associated with each maintenance script. This indicates when the scripts' logs were last updated, hence when the scripts were last executed.

1 - Open Terminal, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.

2 - At the Terminal prompt, type the following, exactly as written:

ls -al /var/log/*.outPress Return.

3 - Press Return
