iPad Air 1 - FaceTime app crashes after a period of time

My iPad Air 1 is running iOS 12.4.8 - when I FaceTime my sister, whose iPad is also on 12.4.8, we have no issues. When I FaceTime my mother who has an iPad Pro running iOS 14, the connection crashes after 5 or so minutes and I have to restart my iPad each time.

Is is there a known iOS compatibly issue between iOS 12.4.8 and iOS 14? If so, what is apple doing to rectify it? Other than this problem my iPad Air is running perfectly.

I have tried: deleting the app and reinstalling it; resetting to factory settings and reinstalling my profile; resetting to factory settings and setting up as new.

An extremely frustrating issue. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Hi all - I updated my iPad to the latest iOS version and the issue with Facetime now seems to be resolved! My iPad Air 1 running iOS 12.5.1 was able to stay connected with an iPad running the latest iOS 14.xxx without any problems.

Many thanks to everyone on this thread for sharing their thoughts.

Update: - Apple called me back today and confirmed this is a known issue with the older software version and they are working on a resolution.

It's good to know the problem is now acknowledged and they are working on a fix. If you have the time to call them, they would be happy to perform a test and take error logs from your machine - it may help with the identification of the bug.

Unfortunately the fix will more than likely not be released before Christmas - it will probably come in the form of another IOS update.

In the meantime, my family has been using an app called 'Houseparty' which, although a game oriented app, also has video calling built in. We have successfully used this app as a workaround to FaceTime without experiencing any conectivity drop-outs. Of course it does mean you (and anyone you want to speak to) need to install the app and create an account, but it is free. Remember to lock the room once all callers are in!

If I hear any more in the interim period, I will post it here. Otherwise, keep a lookout for that update...

Happy Christmas and New Year to all.

Spoke to Apple today. Summary:

  • my iPad is fine, as is my profile
  • issue is probably with compatibility between iOS14 & 12
  • there is an update coming soon for iOS14 - it was suggested to wait for that, to see if it fixes the issue
  • there MAY be an update to iOS12 as well, also with bug fixes - not sure yet

If the issue is not resolved by the iOS14 software update I am to contact them again.

Can confirm that updating to 12.5 doesn’t fix the issue.

The issue appears to be with is with iOS 14 - I had an older gen iPad (2?) running iOS 10 and was getting exactly the same issue with FaceTime calls dropping out. I upgraded to an old iPad Air 1 with 12.4 (and now 12.5) and the problem remains the same - calls dropping out every 7 minutes.

Apple, please fix this as there are many people using older generation iPads as essential communication tools during the pandemic!

Seconded. I have the first edition IPad Air and have just started to experience the problem with the green bar. Sometimes the audio continues for a little bit but my response each time has been to shut FaceTime down completely and restart - asking my interlocutor to call me again. They have a more recent iPad than at his one, purchased in 2018, I think.

I’ve just looked and an update to iOS 12.5 is now available. Will report back on whether that solves the problem.

Given the the cost of these devices, I think there is a strong case to be made against the policy of phased obsolescence described above. Perhaps a petition to the UK parliament might be in order.

Hello P-J-A,

FaceTime is a wonderful feature, and it's very important to work as expected with all your contacts. You mentioned FaceTime is crashing, and you have to restart your iPad to provide a temporary resolution. When FaceTime crashes is it only closing and returning you to the Home screen of the iPad? If so, are you able to reopen FaceTime, and place a FaceTime call to a different contact?

Also, since having this issue have you walked through the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article with your device, and your moms device? If not, it's recommended to complete those steps on both devices.

If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Have a great day!

Hello P-J-A,

We're glad you had the chance to complete those steps, and thank you for clarifying upon the issue further. Was your mom also able to complete the steps in the article? If not, it is recommended that she complete those steps as well. In reference to the iOS versions being different on the devices that shouldn't cause issues. It is recommend though that all devices are running the latest compatible iOS version.

If the issue continues after completing those steps on your mothers devices do reach out to Apple. You can find their available contact details through the Get Support website.

Have a great day

Hi Brenden, thanks for your reply. When Facetime crashes, first the video is lost and a green bar appears at the top of the screen. Audio continues for a short while, around 2 -3 minutes, then that is lost too. The green bar says something like 'to resume Facetime press here' but that does nothing. After Facetime has completely crashed, the iPad behaves very strangely; for example if I use Safari it will either take a very long time to open any page or it will move between tabs on its own. I must stress again this only occurs if I Facetime with my mother, who is using iOS 14.

None of the resolution steps provided in the link helped.

Hi Shaz - Good to hear I am not alone.

I am going to send an email to Apple re this issue. Summary:

  • When I call my mum on her iPad Pro running iOS14 - Facetime crashes
  • When I call my sister on her iPad Mini 2 running iOS12.4 - no problems
  • When my sister calls my mum - no problems

Therefore the only conclusion I can come to is that iPad Air 1 is somehow affected by the latest iOS update when it comes to Facetime.

If I get a reply / conclusion (doubtful) I will post it here.
