iPad Air 1 - FaceTime app crashes after a period of time

My iPad Air 1 is running iOS 12.4.8 - when I FaceTime my sister, whose iPad is also on 12.4.8, we have no issues. When I FaceTime my mother who has an iPad Pro running iOS 14, the connection crashes after 5 or so minutes and I have to restart my iPad each time.

Is is there a known iOS compatibly issue between iOS 12.4.8 and iOS 14? If so, what is apple doing to rectify it? Other than this problem my iPad Air is running perfectly.

I have tried: deleting the app and reinstalling it; resetting to factory settings and reinstalling my profile; resetting to factory settings and setting up as new.

An extremely frustrating issue. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Hi all - I updated my iPad to the latest iOS version and the issue with Facetime now seems to be resolved! My iPad Air 1 running iOS 12.5.1 was able to stay connected with an iPad running the latest iOS 14.xxx without any problems.

Many thanks to everyone on this thread for sharing their thoughts.

Hi Nico,

I was told to wait for software updates to both iOS 12.4.9 and 14.2 - these have been installed by us and the problem persists. In fact it now seems to be worse in that iPads both on v14.2 crash after a period of time when using Facetime. Before I thought this was iPad Air 1st generation iOS12xxx related but now other types are also affected. Not sure what Apple is doing but they need to get this fixed asap.

I have to call Apple again to get this case reopened. I will update this thread with any updates.

Just an update with someone else who is also struggling with this issue. My situation is EXACTLY as P-J-A has outlined

P-J-A wrote:

When Facetime crashes, first the video is lost and a green bar appears at the top of the screen. Audio continues for a short while, around 2 -3 minutes, then that is lost too. The green bar says something like 'to resume Facetime press here' but that does nothing. After Facetime has completely crashed, the iPad behaves very strangely.

I have been dealing with this for about a week now? Unsure how to solve and it's causing great issues as family and I are across the country to each other and now we cannot talk due to this issue. Has anyone been able to find a resolution?

Im another one that has been struggling with this for some weeks. I use facetime only to speak with my 80 year old mother as we live on different continents and having bought her a ipad some years ago and taught her how to facetime during a visit it is pretty much the only video conferencing app she can use. So having this cut out every 5 mins is very upsetting for her because it makes it harder for us to talk plus she is convinced she is doing something wrong. There is zero chance I will be forced into purchasing a new Ipad so I can use later than 12.4.9 - I was considering maybe getting a new one next year but am unlikely to now unless this issue is fixed very soon .

Same here. After almost exactly 7 minutes it crashes (I've times it). Call my mother each week is not as happy anymore. Really frustrating for us.

Also tried calling from MacBook Pro 2013 Catalina. It will crash immediately the iOS app.

Hope Apple does fix this soon. Lately i'm getting more and more disappointed in Apple. Can't get Big Sur on my perfectly working MacBook Pro early 2013. Really an 7 years old device is obsolete to Apple?

Hope 2021 will be a better year.. :-)

While I'm loathe to believe that Apple is intentionally doing this, it IS very easy to believe that they're motivation to fix this issue is likely completely absent. And I stand with all those on this thread that have this issue and feel like Apple, the richest company in the world, can't set aside time to address a bug introduced by their new OS that leaves older uses out in the cold. I mean, what's the use of superior build quality and hardware when OS support ceases to exist for a device that should last significantly longer in the wild than the devices cited in this thread. Frustrating, and a shame, really. Apple, man.... a little help here would nice, doncha think?
