iPad Air 1 - FaceTime app crashes after a period of time

My iPad Air 1 is running iOS 12.4.8 - when I FaceTime my sister, whose iPad is also on 12.4.8, we have no issues. When I FaceTime my mother who has an iPad Pro running iOS 14, the connection crashes after 5 or so minutes and I have to restart my iPad each time.

Is is there a known iOS compatibly issue between iOS 12.4.8 and iOS 14? If so, what is apple doing to rectify it? Other than this problem my iPad Air is running perfectly.

I have tried: deleting the app and reinstalling it; resetting to factory settings and reinstalling my profile; resetting to factory settings and setting up as new.

An extremely frustrating issue. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Hi all - I updated my iPad to the latest iOS version and the issue with Facetime now seems to be resolved! My iPad Air 1 running iOS 12.5.1 was able to stay connected with an iPad running the latest iOS 14.xxx without any problems.

Many thanks to everyone on this thread for sharing their thoughts.

Hi Brenden - none of the suggested resolutions work on my mothers iPad either. I would love to run the latest iOS but for some reason Apple has deemed my iPad to be obsolete, even though it is 64 bit and could probably easily run it. I have the distinct impression Apple would like me to purchase a new device, when actually this one serves my requirements. Also not great for the environment when users are forced to purchase new devices which are actually not needed.

When the situation is back to normal I will visit the Apple Store and see what they say. iPads are great but Apple is beginning to get on my nerves...

Thanks anyway for your time.

Hi lkmtleaf

I haven't had a chance to sp2ak to Apple yet but had a quick look on the internet. This seems to be a widespread problem, affecting iPhones as well. Some have mentioned Wifi dropping out, which would explain the issues we have seen. I don't think it is related to a specific generation of iPad anymore, or the software version running because my sister can no longer reliably Facetime with my mother, even though they are both running the latest iOS 14 version. I also read apple is supposedly going to release yet another patch soon. Let's hope that fixes it. When I get some free time I will endeavour to call Apple again.

Hi. My iPad Air, 1st Gen. has started crashing FaceTime as well. I see that many users are having the same experience. Works for 5 minutes or so, then crashes. Get back on, crashes again. It's very frustrating, especially because we're depending on it during this pandemic to stay in touch with family. Looks like we have to wait for an iOS update, perhaps? Guess we'll move to Zoom for now...
