microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro

I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I have spent about 2.5hrs on the phone with apple today about this issue. In the past few days I have turned my phone off and on, tried FT with and without WIFI, removed my phone case to see if it was interfering with the mic, nothing has helped. I decided to try FT on my Ipad to see if how that went and it worked just fine. When I talked to apple today they had me restore my phone. The first time the restore froze and never actually restored it, I did it a second time then it finally restored setting. After the fresh restore I made a FT call and it was still choppy on the other persons end, I have no problems hearing them. Called apple again, I was going to restore a second time but I told this guy(as well as everyone else) about this thread and here is the convo.

Apple Tech: "No I'm not going to have you restore it again, if everyone is having this issue than I'm sure another restore isn't going to fix it. It will probably be fixed in the next IOS update."

Me: "I have told all the other apple techs about this thread and they said they haven't heard about any issues with this so how do you know this will be fixed in the next up date?"

He didn't really answer this question

Apple Tech: "They are wrapping up the newest update right now so if you can hang on for a little bit I'm sure it will be fixed."

Me: "How long is a little bit?"

Apple Tech: "A couple months."

.......................SO I'M SUPPOSED TO PAY $50ISH DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PHONE THAT IS OVER A $1,000 FOR IT TO NOT WORK FOR A " COUPLE MONTHS"????

He then had me try one more thing, turn FT off restart my phone and then turn FT on again, I made a FT call and for about 10 min there was no choppyness butttt then it returned. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do besides return it?!!

Bhavesh210, You suggest that a new user posting to this Tech Thread should read the full thread? To find the resolve? lol, that would be a ghost hunt at this point.

The closest thing to a “resolves” posted here is that a few people reported getting a replacement phone and the issue went away. However, many people (myself included) did solve the issue with a replacement. Same issue different phone.

Right now we are the lab rats for Apple as we all test different settings, talk about our experience, and monitor phones for issues.

I will keep trying some of the posted suggestions, going for a second set of replacement phones soon, and hoping for a software fix. Good luck to us all...

Update: I went back to the store, explained the issue (microphone/audio doesn’t work). After one week I received a replacement phone (model number starts with N). On the service receipt the following comment was made: “During our diagnosis we found an error: Audio & vibration function, outgoing audio, not working.”

So far, no issues with the replacement phone. Fingers crossed...

Hopefully the new phone resolves your issues. Thank you for the note on the N model number.

The info on the replacement warranty ticket was just fluff by the in store reps.

The audio/vibration setting is for incoming calls to vibrate or make sounds when you get a call, text, voicemail, email, reminder, or other type of notification. Nothing to do with your/our outgoing audio issue.

This new phone is doing the same thing as the first phone. I’d to see if apple will take it back. I had to go thru **** yo get help with the first replacement. I’m wore out with solutions. When I use speaker phone people are telling me I m breaking up but hear them fine. These restores, phone supports and problems aren’t worth $1000.00 phone. Got off the phone with apple support today which was elevated to the engineers support. They set up a call back to me for 4:30 PM. My phone never ring. I’m sitting right here and read an this a message, where trying to call you but phone going straight to voice mail. Phone never rang. Was sitting right here. Unfortunately the nearest Apple store to me is Charelston SC. 2hrs. Away. Been dealing with since Dec. 23

Good luck. I’ve changed my iPhone 12 from the first one and now on number 3. Really terrible speakerphone reception and sometimes outgoing voice clarity on others end. I’m now incline to believe this is so wide spread they’re not likely to call a recall. As much as these phones cost we shouldn’t be inconvenienced. I’m sure they are fully aware of the magnitude of these issues.

Good luck I’ve changed my phone Three times. As recently as Yesterday, Feb. 18th. Before I returned home while on speaker phone I called my sister. Long story short same problem. If I still had my IPhone 8 I’d return in a heart beat. Each phone same exact issue. I hear them fine. My voice breaking up terribly. I’ve spent so many hours on Apple, Verizon and texting support I’m tried. All this money. Any suggestions. I’m lost. I sure apple monitor this site and is aware of the issues. Going to contact them again. ☹️☹️☹️

Having the same issues with the mic, only on normal calls though. Calls via apps work fine.

i live in Malaysia where we don’t have an official apple store but authorized services centers. If I were to return my phone right now, they would take 2 weeks before they prepare a replacement (they’d need to do diagnostics and then send it to apple). At this juncture it’s hard for me to do replacements and so I’m just hoping apple will find some software updates.

I took my phone to Bestbuy and they did a diagnostic on my phone and found several failures. None with speaker. But once he cleaned the microphone, and charging port and rechecked the the diagnostic errors cleared. If problem continues to exit give apple a call back. After returning home I called my nephew and he said my voice did break up at times. My nephew sent the link below so I try these suggested fixes.

I am had my second iPhone 12, the first one replaced by Apple and the second one has the same problem as the first. When trying to use the iPhone 12 in any one of several video conferencing abs. Such as, FaceTime, WhatsApp, signal, and others the person on the other end experiences significant break up and cannot understand me

last night we tried to have a video conference for my son‘s birthday. The iPhone 12 works so poorly that we had to hang up and use my wife’s iPhone 8 which worked just fine

as a community what do we have to do to convince Apple that there really is a problem with the iPhone 12. My frustration is palpable

Apple must read these discussions and know there is a problem but they refuse to acknowledge it

I feel exactly the same and had the same experiences unfortunately. I also got my phone exchanged from a iPhone 12 Pro Max to another 12 pro max but it is exactly the same issue! I called in for probably the 20th time, explained the situation and they said “madam considering you have had a exchange this is not likely to be a phone issue but may be your software and advised me to restore”! Yet, still the same problem. I am sick and tired of calling and explaining them and now I don’t think they even believe me! I have already advised my friends, family and colleagues not to purchase the iPhone 12. Just disgraceful!

Question:

Q:

Speaker Microphone choppy

Anyone having problems with speaker/Microphone issues. When on speaker phone other parties kelp complaining about my voice coming across choppy. I may have a fix after three new replacement phones.

This is my 3rd. Phone. After many hours with apple phone support my problem was elevated to a senior advise who suggested to restore my phone to factor reset. So far so good after restored by apple and not from my iCloud restore.

Obviously the first phone’s software was defective. Therefore every restore from cloud or phone to phone was restoring the same defective software.

so far since the factory restore Speaker Phone choppiness gone. Made several calls using sparkler with no problem. Good luck.

Hey! I have an iPhone 12 mini. I have the exact same problem. I waited for the software update but the problem hasn’t resolved yet. I contacted Apple and they made me do a few changes in setting but the problem hasn’t resolved. They said it could be a hardware issue. This is really annoying. The first software update crashed my phone(it blacked out and never came back on) and now this.

They said I might have to send it off to servicing, but it would have made sense if the problem was only with my phone. However, it seems to be an issue with many. Has anyone figured out what is causing this yet?

Same problem. Me, my husband, my daughter, and my son-in-law all bought the iPhone 12 on the same day in November 2020 (I think).....FINALLY, I've taken the time to google whether other people have had trouble not being able to hear on FaceTime. I have a grandchild so I FaceTime with them EVERY DAY, and we are at our wits' end not being able to talk to each other! The best we can do is turn our phones with the microphone facing up, and that helps, but it's ridiculous! We paid THOUSANDS of dollars for these phones, and three of us had perfectly fine iPhones before we did the trade-in.

After reading so many of these responses, I'm BLOWN AWAY that when I googled this, there were no NEWS articles about this. All of you have been calling and calling Apple and NOT ONE person has received a "fix" to the situation.

Are there actually iPhone 12s that don't crackle in and out? Is that why Apple is ignoring this?

microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
