microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Low and behold, we found two threads, this one and another at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252186963?page=1
Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.
Hi Lawrence, I see people referring to a beta version of 4.3 beta 2 as a potential fix. Would it be worthwhile trying to get this? And if so, how would I go about it?
I don't really want to send back 3 12 pros tbh as this just means lots of timewasting delays.
I bought an iphone 12 pro max and, I have done all kind off troubleshooting you can think off, starting from noise cancellation toggle, up to restoring iPhone, and I am still having the issue, is it an ios issue or hardware issue, can any one help
I set up a Genius Bar appointment (which is pretty complicated in 2020 pandemic Madrid), so I'm hopeful they'll be able to solve the issue or replace the phone (which is a bummer, considering I've already had to replace a faulty Apple Watch Series 6, also purchased in early November). Obviously not a good year for tech production, but I guess I'm grateful that these are these are the problems I'm dealing with in the current global climate.
For what it's worth, I tried unpairing and re-pairing the Apple Watch (as suggested in another post), but it didn't work. In my case, the bug only affects audio quality in video recordings (massive static sounds) and incoming calls (I have to enable then disable speakerphone for the other person to hear me).
i did this last night and have not yet paired my apple watch either. i feel like its even worse today! lol. but thank you for the suggestion! im going to try to get a replacement too. unfortunately im 3 hours from the nearest apple store so thats not an option.
Same! I think it’s a connectivity issue. Like cellular data/WiFi/5G issue. I have the 12 Pro Max and experience the same thing. It’s extremely frustrating. It’s like FaceTime no loner works for me because either the person I am FaceTiming with can’t hear me or I can’t hear them. Any tips and tricks to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, mine is also a work phone. and because im not near an apple store i have to send this one back and go through the whole process again of ordering the phone. busy time at work too so not convenient at all to be having this problem .

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone 12 pro max when doing video calls. I have recipients tell me the volume is very low and choppy at times. Sometimes mute/unmute fixes the problem, sometimes it doesn't. It is very frustrating. I'm posting this so Apple can hopefully see it and fix the problem.
i purchased an iphone 12 pro max Nov 14 when using speaker phone cuts in and out. Phone has been in case from day one! I have taken it out to see if that what was causing issue, still cutting in and out. THE ATT rep said they can't hear me. I have contacted apple/ATT everyone has just dragged me along- apple told me switch my 7 sim to my 12, well we know that can't happen because 7 4G. Phone has been reset, cut off switch to tower, whatever ATT does to consider a fix, they then told me i had to pay 200.00 for warranty even though i have not made 1 payment on the phone. They are mistaken if they think i am going to pay 1450 for a phone and then give them another 200.00 for a warranty for a phone that is not even 30 days old. apple is putting out defective equipment and selling it and consumers are paying the price
Despite being told last week by Apple that this update would be fixing the microphone problem, when I downloaded it, I noticed in the description of what it was to fix, the microphone was not included and neither was the issue that some people have with their calls dropping mid sentence. VERY frustrating!
Funny how I go to the apple store, waste my time driving an hour to get there to have them say the same thing to 600+ people, “it’s a software issue”. I did everything to try to fix it and nothing worked. Shame on you guys for disappointing me. I’ve had apple for a very long time and never had issues.
obviously if you completely cover it yes, however on the 12 its a completely different setup. I could lean my phone upright on a facetime call and have no problem talking on my X. Now on the 12 pro it sounds like its covered up and it cuts out everytime. I appreciate your lack of help :)
I wonder how many people have to have the same issue before Apple acknowledges it or tries to solve it. What is the parameter for their actuary. This seems more than just fluke that people are having this problem, it seems specific to 12 pro too..... maybe if it was reported on Gizmodo or CNBC
100% man. This is a huge flaw smh. Needs to be on all news outlets before they make a fix for it, or some type of apology and then the all new iphone 13 comes out in 3 months with an OLEDX2 screen and 26 hours of battery life for 1200 haha.
No, if it was bad software for noise cancellation then the solution of removing the case would work for everyone. What it means is that a group of phones have similar symptoms, and there is more than one cause for those symptoms.
