microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?
iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I have spent about 2.5hrs on the phone with apple today about this issue. In the past few days I have turned my phone off and on, tried FT with and without WIFI, removed my phone case to see if it was interfering with the mic, nothing has helped. I decided to try FT on my Ipad to see if how that went and it worked just fine. When I talked to apple today they had me restore my phone. The first time the restore froze and never actually restored it, I did it a second time then it finally restored setting. After the fresh restore I made a FT call and it was still choppy on the other persons end, I have no problems hearing them. Called apple again, I was going to restore a second time but I told this guy(as well as everyone else) about this thread and here is the convo.
Apple Tech: "No I'm not going to have you restore it again, if everyone is having this issue than I'm sure another restore isn't going to fix it. It will probably be fixed in the next IOS update."
Me: "I have told all the other apple techs about this thread and they said they haven't heard about any issues with this so how do you know this will be fixed in the next up date?"
He didn't really answer this question
Apple Tech: "They are wrapping up the newest update right now so if you can hang on for a little bit I'm sure it will be fixed."
Me: "How long is a little bit?"
Apple Tech: "A couple months."
.......................SO I'M SUPPOSED TO PAY $50ISH DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PHONE THAT IS OVER A $1,000 FOR IT TO NOT WORK FOR A " COUPLE MONTHS"????
He then had me try one more thing, turn FT off restart my phone and then turn FT on again, I made a FT call and for about 10 min there was no choppyness butttt then it returned. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do besides return it?!!
I am getting a replacement for my phone today! I have already told them that many have said the problem isn't resolved even after a replacement. I don't know what should I really be doing at this stage. :(
I have the same problem with 11 pro max talking to my daughter on iPhone 11. I can hear her clearly. And now with my wife’s iPhone 12 Pro, same issue
but if I switch to older devices 6s or 8s, I don’t face any problem.
The problem is same with FT and WA and on both WiFi and cellular data.
@Apple, at least acknowledge, this is frustrating.
I have the same problem sent it off for a repair and they spent it bald apparently they changed the display to it to apple white they took it in for a hour cleaned the speaker and gave back saying there’s nothing g wrong with it and were very argumentative that there’s nothing wring it I’m stuck with the same issue which is extremely annoying how did you get them to exchange it I’m out off the 14 day period as well
As previously posted awhile back, I reset my iPhone 12 to original settings after deleting all data. Then, DO NOT restore from backup. Sign in with your Apple ID and photos etc will reload if you saved previously in ICloud. You will have to manually enter all needed info. Previously downloaded apps from Apple store can be located and again downloaded. NO MORE SPEAKER PROBLEMS. Apparently there is a bug which keeps getting reinstalled from your backups.
Well I’m glad that it worked for you but when I got my second iPhone from Apple brand new. I installed no apps and did not do A restore.
I tried to FaceTime and WhatsApp and it failed
The people on the other end said my voice was all garbled and breaking up
I did performed a factory reset, set it up as a new phone and the issue was still there. The only app I did downloaded was the Phone Diagnostic app to perform tests on the device. Of course the bottom mic failed when I ran the tests. Glad it worked for you though.
Have had the mic problems on all three of our iPhone 12’s since buying in November .
Took them to apple and they tested and even though they all passed, the apple employee acknowledged that they are awaiting an update to fix the know problem with all iPhone 12’s and suggested returning for a refund to place of purchase as they do not know when an update fix we happen. It is covered under apple care but they said there is no point swapping it out as the problem will occur with a new phone as it is a software issue.
apple provided a letter confirming the issue and we have returned to place of purchase and exchanged for an iPhone 11pro which is perfect .
Had the same problem in Phone and Camera apps that started to happen after I've paired with second AirPods. The only thing that worked for me was enabling Headphone Accommodations (Settings -> Accessibility -> Audio / Visual -> Headphone Accommodations) as well as toggling Phone Noise Cancellation on/off. Seems to be a software issue.
(IPhone 12 Pro, 14.4 iOS)
We have this on 4 iPhone 12 minis bought at the same time this Christmas. One appears slightly less effected than the others, but still clips a bit. The others are terrible, making it almost i possible to have a proper conversation. It also happens on my own iPhone 12 pro max. It makes FaceTime pretty much useless as the sound just clips on and off.
This sort of issue should addressed as a P1 by Apple support. The current situation is getting silly.
I’ve had every iPhone iteration since the original iPhone, and never had this issue.

Same problems with choppy audio on an iphone 12 pro. Tried all the tricks in this thread. Finally used a pair of apple earbuds from an old iphone 6. They worked and everyone can now hear me OK. Not an acceptable long term solution, but a good work around for now.
GrantAustralia and others. I am having the same issues as well and have been working with Apple for 2 months (and hours and hours worth of my time) on possible "fixes." The latest reply was....It is likely a feedback loop issue that is expected behavior...seriously!!!!! And that I just need to use my earphones to make calls and/or wait for another update. amazing.
Could you by chance provide me a copy of the letter that Apple gave you acknowledging the issue? I would LOVE to exchange for an iPhone 11. Thanks so much!
I had the same problem on 11 Pro, it works totally fine on AirPods but not otherwise. Apple replaced it, tried all of above including replacing SIM card blaming on AT&T. I bought a new phone 12 Pro yesterday and I am typing for the same problem from 12 Pro now. Super frustrating , wasted money on two phone.
Unfortunately I can’t find the letter apple had sent me but if I find it I will send if BUT under consumer affair laws in Australia you are still able to return your phone to where you purchased it as long as you can show it’s faulty. We bought ours at JB hifi and regardless of having a confirmation from Apple , we had do show JB hifi the fault which was the mic/speaker when using it on loudspeaker. The problem was obvious so they had to refund/replace.
Thankyou so much for this information. I am having problems with complete silence on FaceTime, taking phone calls on loudspeaker and hands free in the car. I have done a soft reset, hard reset and set up as a new phone. I haven’t yet done a hard reset without backing the phone up as I’m loath to do this and find it doesn’t work. I have had the phone just over 2 weeks. Feel like Apple art fobbing me off and that it’s my fault. I ran the diagnostic app suggested and the bottom mic failed. Apple are supposedly going to call me tomorrow to get it sorted by arranging a replacement new phone. Never ever had problems with apple phones before and this is my 4th one.
I have the same choppy audio issue with my 11 Pro and 12 Pro. And burnt a months over this issue. Accidentally in the last week, audio seems fine when the phone is oriented in landscape mode for FaceTime/Whatsapp video calls. Problem returns when phone oriented in portrait mode.
