microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro

I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I have spent about 2.5hrs on the phone with apple today about this issue. In the past few days I have turned my phone off and on, tried FT with and without WIFI, removed my phone case to see if it was interfering with the mic, nothing has helped. I decided to try FT on my Ipad to see if how that went and it worked just fine. When I talked to apple today they had me restore my phone. The first time the restore froze and never actually restored it, I did it a second time then it finally restored setting. After the fresh restore I made a FT call and it was still choppy on the other persons end, I have no problems hearing them. Called apple again, I was going to restore a second time but I told this guy(as well as everyone else) about this thread and here is the convo.

Apple Tech: "No I'm not going to have you restore it again, if everyone is having this issue than I'm sure another restore isn't going to fix it. It will probably be fixed in the next IOS update."

Me: "I have told all the other apple techs about this thread and they said they haven't heard about any issues with this so how do you know this will be fixed in the next up date?"

He didn't really answer this question

Apple Tech: "They are wrapping up the newest update right now so if you can hang on for a little bit I'm sure it will be fixed."

Me: "How long is a little bit?"

Apple Tech: "A couple months."

.......................SO I'M SUPPOSED TO PAY $50ISH DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PHONE THAT IS OVER A $1,000 FOR IT TO NOT WORK FOR A " COUPLE MONTHS"????

He then had me try one more thing, turn FT off restart my phone and then turn FT on again, I made a FT call and for about 10 min there was no choppyness butttt then it returned. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do besides return it?!!

Update:

I just returned all 3 of our iPhones without any change in this issue. (12/12pro/12proMax)

I hope the recent 14.4 update will have a positive affect but the patch notes did not say anything about a microphone fix for this issue. 15+ years with Apple this is my first major complaint.

My advice is everyone should return their phones to Apple as many times as possible while under warranty. Apple needs to step up and both acknowledge this issue and FIX it.

I was having the same problem (when using FaceTime my audio was coming through as choppy for the other end) with my iPhone 12 Pro. In trying to figure this out I had watched a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WuYUBxm3zs) and got some ideas to try. I got online with a friend of mine who has a good knowledge of audio/video operation to try these suggestions. His observation was that it seemed like the mic was not keeping up and could only output part of the audio.

One of the video's suggestions was to turn off the microphone for all the other apps using it and then turn back on. But what I actually did was to turn them off and leave them off. Then my audio was coming through fine! So certainly NOT a long-term solution but more of a clue about what is happening. I'm curious for folks to try it and see what results they get. To turn off the mic for all the apps that are using it go to Settings => Privacy => Microphone and turn all of these off. And then try FaceTime and see if your audio is now coming through fully.

I had the same issue, bought new iPhone 12 in December 2020, Tried talking with apple, they walk me through all trouble shoot and I performed all of the, Muting your mic while on facetime on speaker does the trick but its not practically possible all the time, eventually I had to replace both mine and my wife's 12 with apple. They replaced it and its working fine as of now. Its been 2 days and did a lot of facetime all over globe, no issue so far. Fingers crossed.

Last resort is to get replacement, explain them in details about your issue and also show them or paste them the link of online apple discussion. Not a lot chat support person are aware of this issue so. Hope this helps.

I purchased a brand new iPhone 12 about a month ago. My iPhone 6s was in good working order but I wanted a new one. The 6S Still works perfectly with the microphone when using FaceTime, WhatsApp or other video conferencing apps. The iPhone 12 does not work properly. I took it back to the Apple store and they could not solve the problem so they gave me a brand new one. The problem still exists on the new one, so I believe it is either a microphone speaker design problem or a software issue

The reason I believe it is a speaker microphone design issue, is that when I use a headset The problem is completely gone

I have tested this with four of my children in many parts of the country and the only solution is to use a headset.

that tells me it’s a conflict between the microphone and the speakers

As mentioned, the workaround is in my post of Feb. 4, and I've copy/pasted the specific thing to try below, for your convenience. Please refer to that prior post if you want more background info. Thanks!

Well, as a statement to all who seem to be having various different iterations or similar problems

does anyone really Believe that a brand new Apple iPhone 12 that has any of the above problems shouldn’t be solved by Apple

shutting off features in order to use a particular app seems a bit inconsistent with what Apple is supposed to be selling. A product that works with all apps.

After trying to have a decent video audio conversation with a variety of applications such as FaceTime, WhatsApp, telegram and signal all which I have tried, all failed to degree or another

I also had a daily ongoing discussion with second level Apple support for almost 2 weeks.

their main answer was to “upgrade to the latest iOS”

unfortunately that’s where I started this whole series of problems. A brand new iPhone 12 came out of the box with OS 14.2

I upgraded it to 14.3, and the problem existed

they replaced the phone which started with iOS 14.1 and it has the same problem

I think it’s time Apple stepped up to the plate and solved the problem

There are two separate problems but no one can seem to wrap their head around that. One is software (choppy audio) and one is hardware (no audio). No audio is when siri doesnt work and voice memo doesnt work. If you can use these two features you most likely do not have the hardware problem that requires a phone replacement.

I had the same problem when I had purchased a new iPhone 12 Pro in the US. After trying many workarounds, I just took it to an Apple Store here in Pune India. They sent the phone to their main center in Bangalore and in about a week provided a replacement model with no any charge. I suggest everyone here to just take their phone to the Apple Store and get it replaced.

I did replaced mine. The problem still exist with the new phone. Chopped up calls, people constantly complaining about my voice breaking up. I’m at a lost at this point. They wanted to give me a refurbished phone at first. I had to fight like ****, many hours, days on the phone with apple and Verizon, trips back and forth to Verizon trying to find a fix. It’s definitely the microphone when using microphone voice calling. When I take it off mic and put the phone to my ear the choppiness seem to stop according to person on other end. How long have you had the new phone. I have the iPhone 12

From your description that sounds like the noise cancellation feature is interfering with the call; feedback from the speaker is being detected as noise by the noise cancellation algorithm. Try turning it off. Also, on the back of the phone find the noise cancellation microphone (it’s a small hole near the camera) and make sure your case isn’t partially covering it.
