microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Low and behold, we found two threads, this one and another at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252186963?page=1
Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.
I am had my second iPhone 12, the first one replaced by Apple and the second one has the same problem as the first. When trying to use the iPhone 12 in any one of several video conferencing abs. Such as, FaceTime, WhatsApp, signal, and others the person on the other end experiences significant break up and cannot understand me
last night we tried to have a video conference for my son‘s birthday. The iPhone 12 works so poorly that we had to hang up and use my wife’s iPhone 8 which worked just fine
as a community what do we have to do to convince Apple that there really is a problem with the iPhone 12. My frustration is palpable
Apple must read these discussions and know there is a problem but they refuse to acknowledge it
Hey! I have an iPhone 12 mini. I have the exact same problem. I waited for the software update but the problem hasn’t resolved yet. I contacted Apple and they made me do a few changes in setting but the problem hasn’t resolved. They said it could be a hardware issue. This is really annoying. The first software update crashed my phone(it blacked out and never came back on) and now this.
They said I might have to send it off to servicing, but it would have made sense if the problem was only with my phone. However, it seems to be an issue with many. Has anyone figured out what is causing this yet?

Sounds like a network problem.
I have the same problem when I speak with the speakers on. In both normal call and FaceTime call
Any suggestions on what’s the problem? Or how to fix it?
This is extremely annoying. +$1000 USD phone and the mic is not working. Purely an iPhone 12 Pro issue. Apple, please fix ASAP.
I have the same issue.
The microphone starts working after 1 minute wait. For such an expensive phone this is a huge disappointment.
Just did 12.2.1 while it did considerably help, it’s not quite fixed yet. It sounds so widespread that swapping phone won’t help much
If you got a replacement, try to keep the IOS as it comes with the box 14.1
Then you are either connected to VPN or in a country that does not have access to apple.com.
it 100% sounds like a noise cancellation issue. Not sure why this hasnt been addressed but it’s definitely more than annoying. It happens with speakerphone too.
Thats clearly not why everyone is having this the issue haha. This is prior to cases. Its bad software for noise cancellation most likely.
😂 can’t make appointment as in Covid lock down.
from thread it seems simple, just swap to new iPhone.
Apparently there is a widespread hardware failure. They are going to replace your phone.
