microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro

I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I have spent about 2.5hrs on the phone with apple today about this issue. In the past few days I have turned my phone off and on, tried FT with and without WIFI, removed my phone case to see if it was interfering with the mic, nothing has helped. I decided to try FT on my Ipad to see if how that went and it worked just fine. When I talked to apple today they had me restore my phone. The first time the restore froze and never actually restored it, I did it a second time then it finally restored setting. After the fresh restore I made a FT call and it was still choppy on the other persons end, I have no problems hearing them. Called apple again, I was going to restore a second time but I told this guy(as well as everyone else) about this thread and here is the convo.

Apple Tech: "No I'm not going to have you restore it again, if everyone is having this issue than I'm sure another restore isn't going to fix it. It will probably be fixed in the next IOS update."

Me: "I have told all the other apple techs about this thread and they said they haven't heard about any issues with this so how do you know this will be fixed in the next up date?"

He didn't really answer this question

Apple Tech: "They are wrapping up the newest update right now so if you can hang on for a little bit I'm sure it will be fixed."

Me: "How long is a little bit?"

Apple Tech: "A couple months."

.......................SO I'M SUPPOSED TO PAY $50ISH DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PHONE THAT IS OVER A $1,000 FOR IT TO NOT WORK FOR A " COUPLE MONTHS"????

He then had me try one more thing, turn FT off restart my phone and then turn FT on again, I made a FT call and for about 10 min there was no choppyness butttt then it returned. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do besides return it?!!

Now that makes more sense. I read that the bottom mike is the last, farthest right two holes but didn’t realize it worked in conjunction with the top one. The case I have is confining on the bottom two so I widened the hole slightly with a drill. It works better but works great without the case at all. Of course you can’t prop it up on a flat surface or the holes will be covered.

Basically it seems to be a software/hardware issue. it seems to only be an issue on speaker calls or facetime. I did get a case from a brand called Catalyst that totally solved the issue for me though. It was their non-waterproof case, called Influencer or something like that. Seems they have some like case details that solve it. Love this case for many reasons. Hope this helps.

Got the new iPhone pro before New Years... the microphone is not working when I use speaker, Siri and when I stream into my hearing aids on phone calls which is unacceptable for someone with a disability.

-I tried resetting

-updating to 14.4

-I Checked all my microphone settings, I turned on my 7 plus to see if the settings were the same and they were

I am going to go to my cell phone store to see if they can fix it or I can swap for a new iPhone pro. This is not ok

I just purchased the IPhone 12 Pro and I have the exact same issue when using Messenger to speak. The person I am speaking with says I sound muffled or the audio is choppy. If I use headphones then they are able to hear me just fine but this is not a solution to the problem. I am very saddened that such a basic feature was not tested properly. Thank you for posting this so I know that it is not just my phone and that this is a wide spread issue.

I have an iPhone 12 with the latest IOS version and I'm having one of the issues that have been mentioned on this thread.

My microphone doesn't work when I try to record a voice memo, send an audio message using Whatsapp, or any other kind of audio in any other app EXCEPT system apps like the camera.

I made a few tests which led me to believe this is a software permissions related issue.

The microphone works just fine when doing an old fashioned call or when recording a video with front or back camera. The microphone does not work at all when I try to record an audio with a 3rd party app (or actually apps that can be deleted, like voice memo), with none of them ( I tried a few). I did check all these apps had the given permission to access the microphone, I tried the noice cancelation thing, factory reset, all of it.

Why do I think this is permission related? Try this at home. Go to Whatsapp (might work with some other app), record a video with sound, play it, you don't need to send it. Now record an audio message and send it. This has always worked for me, this audio message works just fine, proving is not hardware related. After the first audio sent after this method, it fails agaim, but if you go through the whole process, it works for 1 audio message

I have the same issue on my newly bought iphone 12 pro. My case is specifically designed for Iphone 12/12 pro so it is not covering any microphone holes at the bottom or at the back so obviously it is not the case issue. My iphone is updated to ios 14.2.1 and still having this problem.

Haven’t tried noise cancellation switch off but i felt holding the phone in my hand instead made the problem little better (not completely fine) than keeping it on the table while on speaker. Had Iphone X before with no issues whatsoever.

Oh looks like this is a common problem in all phones, I have the same issue and wasn't resolved yet.

If it was a common problem in all phones there would be thousands of posts about it. I know personally of over a dozen iPhone 12’s that do not have any problem with the microphone. The most likely cause is either a case that obscures either the primary mic at the bottom of the phone or the noise cancellation mic on the back of the phone near the camera. At least a few cases are caused by holding the phone with a finger on the bottom that covers the primary mic. And some cases might actually be a hardware problem. And there are other possibilities also. But it is not a common problem; it is an unusual problem.

A few weeks ago I posted that mine started working after I got off the phone using my Bluetooth headphones. That was the only thing I had not tried after weeks of trying just about everything. A couple of days later, it stopped working again. After 15 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to get it back on, I got ****** and blew really hard right into the microphone. It’s been working great for 2 weeks now. Crazy!
