microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro

I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Low and behold, we found two threads, this one and another at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252186963?page=1

Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download ‎Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.

Interesting insight! Since I paired a new Apple Watch last week, I decided to review and compare the videos recorded before and after pairing the device. Lo and behold, the mic issues started the same day I paired the watch (in fact, I noticed the issues precisely because of the static sound on any videos recorded with the iPhone camera app, while videos on other apps -such as Insta stories- work fine). Maybe I’ll give re-pairing the watch a go! Will keep you all posted.

I have had this problem since my first day of getting the iphone 12 pro. When I'm on facetime or speaker phone the person on the other side will see and hear me talking then all of a sudden it just goes silent on their side and they can see me talking but don't hear anything. I talked to apple support and did everything with resetting facetime and the phone and then resetting the entire phone completely. I was told this was a hardware problem so I should reach out to my cell provider and get a new phone. I did that and got my new phone 2 days ago and IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM! This is very frustrating, and I did not expect my new iphone 12 pro to have this problem. When will this be fixed? Is this truly a software issue or will this over $1k phone always have this issue?!

Same problem here with my iPhone 12 Mini... on regular phone calls, input audio cuts out and no one can hear me, or they say the sound is degraded (robotic/choppy). Running 14.2.1, case/no-case, multiple resets, noise cancel on/off, speaker-phone on/off... none of the proposed fixes have worked. Hardware-wise, the mic works as expected for voice memo and video.

I will add that it also happens while using my Bose bluetooth headset. Possibly unrelated, I'm not hearing the dialing sound while the phone is connecting, and the first words of the person who answers are truncated. The conditions (location/network) are no different than what was working fine for my iPhone X.

It needs to be stressed to Apple how critical this issue is. I use this phone for work and it's unacceptable that I'm unable to facilitate meetings. The audio failed again today while trying to make a doctor's appointment... I can't imagine where I'd be if it had been a 911 call.

Yeah no crap! My fiancé had to go back twice and we live an hour away!!! Like seriously wasting everyone’s time when they know what the problem is, but they don’t care about their people to fix it. Own up to your problems. We finally were able to switch out the phone to a new one, after telling the first guy that we had to do that. “Just restore your iPhone and it’ll work”. Just for us to go home and not have it work, after us telling the guy it wouldn’t...

The mic on the back is not the main microphone, which is at the bottom of the phone on the left, where all iPhone microphones have been for 13 1/2 years. The microphone on the back is for noise cancellation. The way it works is if both microphones “hear” the same sound at the same level it is considered noise, and the phone briefly mutes the mic. The Apple engineers know what they are doing, you just don’t understand the design.

I have the same issue on my newly bought iphone 12 pro. My case is specifically designed for Iphone 12/12 pro so it is not covering any microphone holes at the bottom or at the back so obviously it is not the case issue. My iphone is updated to ios 14.2.1 and still having this problem.

Haven’t tried noise cancellation switch off but i felt holding the phone in my hand instead made the problem little better (not completely fine) than keeping it on the table while on speaker. Had Iphone X before with no issues whatsoever.

I am returning my iPhone 12 Pro. I tried noise cancellation, update, factory reset, recording on voice memo, camera. Seems like a bad software problem with a whole batch of phones. How could apple do this? They unleashed a product that wasn't tested/ ready and treated its customers like test subjects. Solution is to return this device and wait for the next iPhone model where they have possibly fixed this bug. Perhaps when the pandemic is over, they will test the device properly before launching it. Or a simple solution is to shun apple completely as it appears to me that being hideous is their new mantra.

I can't believe I got this phone - in times when majority of the work is done virtually. And I work in a hospital. What apple did with this phone is nothing short of criminal.

If it is still within the Apple warranty period I would RETURN IT ASAP. Let's all make Apple painfully aware of this issue until it is both acknowledged and resolved. They just had recorded profits so I think they can afford some R&D to fix their flagship product!!

I have returned 3 iPhone 12s without any change in this issue.

I hope the recent 14.4 updates will have a positive effect but the patch notes did not say anything about a microphone fix for our collective issue. After 15+ years with Apple, this is my first major complaint.

Update:

I just returned all 3 of our iPhones without any change in this issue. (12/12pro/12proMax)

I hope the recent 14.4 update will have a positive affect but the patch notes did not say anything about a microphone fix for this issue. 15+ years with Apple this is my first major complaint.

My advice is everyone should return their phones to Apple as many times as possible while under warranty. Apple needs to step up and both acknowledge this issue and FIX it.

Bhavesh210, You suggest that a new user posting to this Tech Thread should read the full thread? To find the resolve? lol, that would be a ghost hunt at this point.

The closest thing to a “resolves” posted here is that a few people reported getting a replacement phone and the issue went away. However, many people (myself included) did solve the issue with a replacement. Same issue different phone.

Right now we are the lab rats for Apple as we all test different settings, talk about our experience, and monitor phones for issues.

I will keep trying some of the posted suggestions, going for a second set of replacement phones soon, and hoping for a software fix. Good luck to us all...
