I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.
It’s a hardware design flaw. Nothings going to fix it other than a redesign and product recall which Apple won’t willingly do.
I've had complete success with the "fix" I've posted a few times. It must be done exactly as described.

Overall after having the iphone 12 plus for 3 months. This phone sucks. Probably the worst iphone to date, thats all their is to it. Haha
I am on eSim, and my VoLTE is on - sadly, my issues still persist.
I agree. I used to love my iPhones but this one overheats like crazy and lags!
I am still testing mine regarding the casing trick. Looks like everyone has a different scenario. Really hope 14.5 fixes everything.
I am having issues with my iPhone 12 Pro Max micro phone , people can’t hear from messenger and WhatsApp.
me too, choppy mic with no help from Apple. Let’s hope for a fix soon.

This is my second iPhone 12. I thought it was the phone and had to jump through hoops to get it replaced. Once replaced same problem with speaker and calls braking up terriblely. At this point Im at total lost. I’ve spent hours on the phone with apple and my provider trying to resolve this problem. Good luck.
I had the same problem when I had purchased a new iPhone 12 Pro in the US. After trying many workarounds, I just took it to an Apple Store here in Pune India. They sent the phone to their main center in Bangalore and in about a week provided a replacement model with no any charge. I suggest everyone here to just take their phone to the Apple Store and get it replaced.
I did replaced mine. The problem still exist with the new phone. Chopped up calls, people constantly complaining about my voice breaking up. I’m at a lost at this point. They wanted to give me a refurbished phone at first. I had to fight like ****, many hours, days on the phone with apple and Verizon, trips back and forth to Verizon trying to find a fix. It’s definitely the microphone when using microphone voice calling. When I take it off mic and put the phone to my ear the choppiness seem to stop according to person on other end. How long have you had the new phone. I have the iPhone 12
