microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Low and behold, we found two threads, this one and another at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252186963?page=1
Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.
From your description that sounds like the noise cancellation feature is interfering with the call; feedback from the speaker is being detected as noise by the noise cancellation algorithm. Try turning it off. Also, on the back of the phone find the noise cancellation microphone (it’s a small hole near the camera) and make sure your case isn’t partially covering it.
Ok algorithm was already off. I did have a camera protector over lens which also cover Flash and mic. Removed cover and will try your suggestions. Great and thanks for the information. Glad I joined site.
Dont know. Read something about you should test the mic. With voice memo and if there is a problem you should hard reset it.
I just soft reset it but don’t know if it fixed anything
a bit annoying with a brand new phone
It's not network problem! I had this issue today via facebook video calls speakers on Iphone 12 Pro MIC cuts off and barely can be heard. Switched my call to my old Iphone 7+ no issue whatsoever on same network.
I had the same problem with iPhone 12 mini and I returned it. The microphone for calls and video worked but for voice memo and calls on other apps did not work. Such a pity for an expensive smartphone.
I tried reset to factory, checking privacy for access to microphone, updating the ios, turning off the Bluetooth, and none of them worked. Maybe I will buy it again when apple fixed the problem.
I have done some extensive testing on my iPhone 12 Pro and this seems to be a software / hardware issue of the new device. I hope it can be fixed with a software update. As far as I can tell, the noise canceling microphone is right next to the speaker holes at the bottom of the device and when on a speaker call the noise canceling microphone seems to get overwhelmed "IF" both persons are talking at the same time. So if you are on a speaker call using an iPhone 12 device and you try to talk at the same time as the other person on the call the voice of the iPhone 12 user will be cut out entirely. If the iPhone 12 user is in a noisy environment it will have the same effect. So to have a clear hands free speaker call using an iPhone 12 you need to be in a quiet environment and do not try to talk at the same time as the other person you are having a call with. I have tried a particular brand of phone case that solves this issue, but I think it might be against the terms and conditions of this community to try to promote products.
iOS 14.2.1 did not fix it for me. Just had a similar issue today. The other person on the other end could only hear a static white noise during facetime, skype, or when I used speaker phone during regular calls, and could not hear what I was saying at all.
Voice memo also only recorded a static noise.
The only thing that worked was a normal audio call (without speaker phone).
Issue somehow went away suddenly after a few hours, and I have not yet been able to recreate it.

I have the same issue on iphone 11 after ios 14.2 update :(
Have you updated to 14.2.1. It’s also been reported that some cases can cause this issue, especially if they were not made specifically for your phone model.
It is a noise cancellation issue on the other end. Meaning if you’re talking with someone on FaceTime or on speaker phone when you’re done speaking press mute. You will be able to hear them clear as day. Unmute start talking. Then mute again. It’s almost like a zoom meeting wherever the phone detects noise either end of the call, is given priority. How to fix this...I have no idea. That’s as far as I’ve gotten.
Have you read any of the thread you posted to, that has other user’s experience in fixing the problem? Things to try:
My case was designed for the iPhone 12 specifically. I do not cover the mic. I hold the phone on the sides. I did the noise cancellation on and off. It has been updated to 14.2.1. AND I got a new phone to replace the hardware and IT STILL HAPPENS ON THE SECOND PHONE!
I have tried everything that you have suggested and it does not work. This is an Apple problem that they MUST fix!
I had this same issue on my iPhone 12 pro and I did setup a genius bar appointment. After a series of test, we noticed that; microphone works properly through normal network calls but not in whatsapp, facetime, messenger, ... calls. Also, we tested the lower microphone using the voice memo app which produced a static "zzzzzzzz" sound.
At the end of a day we ordered a replacement (probably a hardware issue????). So I will advice anyone to try testing the microphone with the above tests. If it does not work, get it replaced by Apple so as to save some precious time. I will eventually update on my replacement request.
i had the same issue and support walked me through some steps as it looked like iMessage and FaceTime were still registering through my old phone; so access your previous phone in setting and toggle off iMessage and FaceTime; then toggle off and on the same things on your new phone and it should register the new device for those applications.

I'm posting this so Apple can hopefully see it and fix the problem.
Then you are wasting your energy. Apple won’t see it in this user to user forum. Here is how to let Apple know: https://Apple.com/feedback
I am having the same issue as well with my iPhone 12 pro. The person on the receiving end of FaceTime and speakerphone calls complains of the sound cutting in and out. Went to the Genius Bar, replicated the issue, was given a replacement phone. Have had new phone for 1 day and having the same issue again.
