iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

Possible solution!! I was having the overheating problem as well, couldn’t get ATT on the phone so I started a chat with Apple. Long story short, I was instructed to reset all settings, let it reboot, then turn it off and let it sit for 20 min. I did, turned it back on, it burned hotter than it ever had for another 30 minutes and now it’s fine. No overheating issues. Fingers crossed that it’s a permanent fix.

FWIW- I’ve had the phone since Saturday afternoon. I transferred everything phone to phone when I set it up and it ran hot just sitting doing nothing (not on a charger) until I cleared the settings. If this didn’t work, I was advised to reset EVERYTHING (blow away all data) and set up the phone as new. If that didn’t fix it, I’d have to have gone through ATT support to obtain a replacement. Hope this helps people!

Just did this a few hours ago. Before you return it go into settings and look at battery. And then look at usage by app. I did this and noticed Waze was using 85% of my battery on my new phone. I deleted the app and now it’s a nice, cool phone with long battery life. Maybe it’s Waze or another app stuck in some loop or something. Worth looking at real quick

Update: after I backed everything up to the iCloud .I did a content reset. I then synced everything from iCloud and it appeared the same as it did just before the reset. I use the phone for the next few days the same as I did before the overheating, and it gets nowhere near as hot. It gets a little warm, but that’s to be expected as normal. my battery life is getting better by the day, so I suggest you try this before trying to return or replace your device. It might have been an app causing the phone to overheat and drain my battery so quickly. Hope this helps someone.

While they are not "re-using" parts from older iPhones (lol), there is definitely an issue with the iPhone 12 that is likely hardware related. My 12 was just replaced for similar issues (overheating, glitching and outright freezing using both Apple[Camera, Maps, Settings, etc] and 3rd party apps). 3x factory resets, following their advice: Once using backup, then again once a fresh/clean install once the backup did not resolve the issue. Even after a clean install w/ factory settings, issues persisted (so I did yet another factory reset and used backup again until it could be resolved).

Apple Support wanted to replace the phone, but not having enough liquid cash I opted to return to Apple store instead - who initially refused, saying it was a software issue and it couldn't be a hardware issue. Thankfully, since the standard was set by Apple Support, they did end up replacing it. Issues have resolved, which leads me to believe it is in fact a hardware issue.

I now possibly have a solution - it’s as simple as updating the software from version 14.2 to 14.3! Let’s see if it helps!

I just had e very good call with Apple Support. They rang me at the agreed time and listened to me describing the overheating and other problems that I’ve exoerienced with my new device (iPhone 12 Pro) . We ran hardware diagnostics together and everything seems to be in order on that front.

The problems may be due to my device running on Software Version 14.2. The advice was to update it to version 14.3 (which I didn’t know already existed, as the device is new and came with v. 14.2). Updating to v. 14.3 should apparently fix all of the problems I’ve encountered.

Apparently there’s something wrong with software version 14.2 which makes the device work too hard to try solve the problems and as a result it uses too much energy, leading to overheating, using up too much battery life, and shutting down functions - like dimming the screen, and dusabling the torch and canera flash - as it’s trying to deal with the overheating. It may also lead to crashing and restarting (which I had plenty of in the first few days) Apps (like FB which may cause more heating) may crash too. The display should present a warning (thermometer image and warning text) about the overheating , but it may not do this in all cases - I never saw the warning on the screen (which again may be a software issue).

If the problems still persist after the software update, I now have a case number and through that a way to get a new phone appointment and/or Apple Store appointment to continue researching the issues.

Let’s hope the software update will fix the issues! 🤞 I feel hopeful now. Hope it works for you guys as well!

Actually, i have found a solution - tough partial and applies only to those in similar circumstances. I had, as part of my Norton subscription, downloaded on my iPhone 12ProMax the app and activated, as it suggested, the VPN. Well, my phone started with the overheating and battery drainage issues, even consuming up to 65% battery by 10 AM!!!

Once I removed the VPNs, all went back to normal. no overheating, and now it is 5 pm and i still have 70% battery despite normal use of the phone (calls, texts, internet searches, etc)

So I hope this helps someone

BesT of luck

Hi everybody experiencing overheating issues with their new iPhone 12 (Pro/ Pro Max)!

I have a new tip from Apple Support that might help:

If you've backe-up and then restored your old iPhone to the new iPhone 12, you might have transferred some old apps that are not compatible with the new operating system. Make sure you've made a new iCloud backup (or laptop backup) and updated your iPhone 12 to Operating System 14.4 and then remove most of your old apps from your device. Apps that are used frequently such as WhatsApp and Facebook etc. may have been updated to be compatible, but some more rare apps might have problems with interoperability and cause software issues and thus overheating. Note that you need to restart your iPhone after removing the apps (otherwise they wont be completely cleared). Then get the apps you need anew from AppStore and thus you'll get the updated versions of them, which should hopefully function better and not cause issues.

My iPhone 12 Pro was sent to the Apple Service Center to be repaired, but there is apparently nothing wrong with the hardware.

It was returned to me and I have since received this advice to remove old apps. I am now testing if it will help with the overheating issue.

Hi guys, Since I’ve been experiencing this issue as one of you. I started search and tested a few thing on my i12 pro then I found what’s cause to overheating my phone. I would like to share this with you guys. Go to settings>Cellular>Cellular Data Options>>Voice Data and choose LTE. After I did this I used phone around 2 weeks and it’s not happened again. When I use with 5G it was getting warm up in 2 minutes. I hope it’s work for you too. Waiting for your comments!

This usually happens when you restore from back-up. iOS will take awhile to re-index a lot of data (indexes are not included in the backup) and optimize it. Sometimes it takes a day or two to complete - depending on how much data you have, how much third-party applications are installed, etc. And as the optimization process requires a lot of resource, the device tends to be heat up.

Wait for 48 hours and see if the behavior continues. If it does, call Apple Support for some instructions on how to troubleshoot it.

Good luck!

So your solution is to just remove any legit app that the phone can’t handle?
what’s next? WiFi too much, turned it off, YouTube videos taking battery, let’s not do that, Bluetooth is overrated anyway prefer my expensive phone to stay cool so I won’t use it at all.

something is wrong with this model.

That's not what the message was. Often in a new phone setup, when apps are brought over, they sometimes have issues, such as not shutting down in the background. That doesn't mean you have to remove the app. It also doesn't mean your phone is defective. It means you need to do some troubleshooting to determine what has gone a bit rogue. That's why your phone provides a way to see which apps are running your battery down, which would also keep your battery working harder and ultimately hotter. Go to Settings > Battery See what's using the most power. That app, may not be running properly under iOS 14.2. You can try to simply force close the app. You can Force Restart your phone. You can delete the app, then reinstall the app.

You need to determine what is causing your issues. It's pretty much a guarantee it's NOT your phone. It's pretty much a guarantee it is some rogue app.

As I just posted on the US site after switching down 5G to 4G in the mobile network settings the phone finally started cooling down. I expect that battery drain will now normalise. I have 5G from T-mobile.

I think apple and T-Mobile have work to do ...

Makes you wonder what 5G is doing to your phone that causes this massive overheating and related battery drain problem...
