iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

Hello, I just bought an iPhone 12 today and I seem to be having the same issues. I began using the phone right away after it was set up, to download apps and make it more personalized as we all do, but I did experience it heating up right away, and extremely hot as well. This got me worried which led me to researching and it brought me here. Please let me know if you find a solution! That was too much money to spend on something that overheats in just a few minutes.

Hello, dblggogs,

I see that you have an overheating iPhone 12 Pro, Sometimes you will find your device is overheating while charging. You should remove the charger or avoid overcharging it. Sometimes it's the wrong charger and adaptor, and sometimes battery issues may cause an overheating issue. You should be careful while charging it. Also, As we mentioned earlier, Background App Refresh can contribute to your iPhone overheating, So go to Settings and then choose General to make sure it's turned off for unnecessary apps. If it's still too hot, go to the app switcher to see all the apps you've got open. If the problem persists then Contact Apple Support here:

Thanks for the reply! I’ve been charging with the standard 20w brick with the MagSafe charger exclusively with the 12 pro. Trying to cut back on that battery degradation this year! I understand the possible link to background app refresh however my settings have remained the same for background app refresh with my X, XS Max, and 11 pro max. So I don’t believe that would be the issue. Also the overheating I am speaking to tends to occur when the phone is not charging and is under very minimal load, things like browsing Instagram, safari, news and even just replying to messages. I feel very confident it is most likely a hardware issue as someone else in my family isn’t experiencing similar issues with their 12 pro. However I definitely wanna wait and see if maybe it could be a software bug, but it sounds like my situation may be an outlier which leads me to think it could be hardware related. Thank you so much!

I just bought the iPhone 12 yesterday and purchased the new charger to go with it. I’m having the same issue. The phone gets extremely hot and I’m concerned it could cause damage.

If the phone doesn't shut down, it hasn't become "too hot," so don't worry about it.

The phones have temperature sensors inside, so no matter what you may think is "too hot," it will display a message if it really does get too hot:

Hello,
The phone shuts down with about two hours of charing. I do not think it is a software issue, as I have turned off all apps and the issue persists. It is a hardware issue.

If you think it is a hardware issue, either contact Apple Support directly or return your phone for a full refund within 14 days of purchase and buy something else.

Never just hope there will be a fix for any product if you're convinced it's in the design.

Yes, it was in a backpack in the sun.

I've had the same thing happen when I have left my phone on a window sill or in my glove compartment on a warm day.

In particular, the phone will need to cool if the case temperature gets above 95°F/35°C:

Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C)

If its overheating denoted by the "iPhone must cool" message that is not at all normal and you should check which of your apps may be responsible.

I have a 12 Pro Max, and mine certainly does not "heat" to that degree.

Dimming the screen, by the way, is a normal screen saver feature that always happens if the phone is idle, regardless of temperature; make sure you have auto dimming shut off in your preferences if you don't want it to happen.

They have; that is why the temperature sensors shut down the phone if it actually gets too hot.
