spinning wheel icon next to wi-fi indicating network activity

how do I stop the spinning wheel next to the WI-FI icon from constantly spinning?  It's eating up data and reducing battery power.  I've actually figured out what triggers this constant network activity. After I hard reset the I-Phone SE to stop the constant network activity, I can use every app with no problems until I use the microphone on the key pad to write/voice a text message or a note, then the wheel starts spinning non-stop until I restart the phone.   Does anyone know how to correct this problem?????????

The spinning icon means that some app is using data. You need to troubleshoot that. If you are using dictation everything you dictate is sent to Apple’s speech recognition server to perform speech to text, and the result is then sent back to your phone. This is the same server that Siri uses. So while you are dictating it will use data continuously, and for a while after you stop as it tries to refine the recognition.

But to troubleshoot go to Settings/Cellular and tap Reset Statistics, and turn off Wi-Fi, so all data goes over cellular. As you use the phone note when it is using data. After a few hours go to Settings/Cellular and the apps that have used data will be listed at the top of the page. You can see which ones used the most.

Yes. «For this particular problem of the perpetual network activity indicator, the device can't be completely "virgin" (as someone else put it), because we will need to enter network settings to connect to the internet. I am not sure what other settings we are forced to set up in order for the device to run. The fewer the better.» (Emphasis added)

Just got off the phone with Apple again they said we are not aware of any problems, I told them they were a bunch of liars I told them to come here to the forums. I spoke to a senior advisor who advised me that they would send me a refurbished phone not a new one. I will come on this forum and bash Apple products to her three times a day because they are absolutely garbage.

I agree ........ there is definitely something wrong with the device. I had no idea that when you return an Apple device that you receive a refurbished device in its place!!!! That's great info.... I may have to re-think my future device purchases because of that.

Well Machine_Ruse your unsurpassed knowledge with technical expertise on these devices is un-real in my opinion, and keeping this thread updated on what you have tried and experience was valuable information. But it sounds as though your exhausted with Apple.......... Anyone else who feels the same way give Machine_Ruse a shoutout!!!!!!!!!!!!! he deserves it. thanks man

No unsurpassed technical expertise on my part. Just good powers of deduction, and my Google-Fu is strong, lol.

I'm really disappointed in this issue. I think the phone represents a good value otherwise, and the size is perfect for my needs. Since I have three of these iPhone SE phones in my house, and mine is the only one exhibiting this problem, then I'll probably try an exchange with Costco before doing an outright return. If that doesn't work out, then back to Android.

When Apple tells me not to worry about it, I consider that a complete dismissal of my concern. they are not having to deal with a battery that runs down in hours if the spinning wheel isn’t caught and stopped.

And yes, they have been aware of this since iPhone 7. And maybe they might do something if we all report it again. Thanks for posting the link again! That makes it easy to submit a concern.

That’s great. It does not work so quickly or easily on mine. Despite the Oracle shrinking and then disappearing, the top spinning wheel often continues. I used to actually talk to siri, thinking that the voice would stop the spinning, but that was not a sure-thing all the time. So over the past couple of years, the thing that I stumbled onto was the repeated tapping while Siri Oracle was activated (it does still shrink down small) and always works for me. I am glad yours is simpler and works well.

Will do! I am glad it has finally been escalated to the engineers.

Apple actually replaced my iPhone SE 2020 to see it if was a hardware issue, but the problem persisted. I need to call them back but haven't done it yet.

It has GOT to be a random crazy glitch triggered by an app or a setting or some combination that only applies to some of us. I wonder how many people experience it and never NOTICE... I told my sister about it, and she went, "Oh my God, mine spins constantly and I never thought anything of it/noticed before you mentioned it! I just keep my phone on low power mode all the time..." Yeahhhh, no.... it's really NOT supposed to do that!
