iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

That is not at all true.

"Qi chargers" are not all the same - for example stand-type Qi chargers almost always fail to work with new iPhones because they hold the phone in a certain relationship to the charger's Qi coil, and the position of the coil changes between models; by comparison, puck-type Qi chargers usually work with all phones.

So a great example is I have stands from Logitech and Belkin that worked with my iPhone 11 Pro Max but don't work properly with my 12 Pro Max:

Belkin for one openly states that it is not compatible with the iPhone 12 family - but they are coming out with a new stand that will be.

Your NANAMI docks are another great example - they hold the phone in a precise relationship with their charging coils, and the coils in the iPhone 12 phones aren't in the same place they were on previous iPhones; the position of the coil in the phone is not part of the Qi standard.

On the other hand, I have a Mophie Qi puck that I bought for use with my iPhone X that still works perfectly to charge my iPhone 12 Pro Max:

I have MagSafe chargers as well, and I prefer them for their additional functionality but don't have to use them.

It will depend on the model of wireless charging base you have, however this is NOT the iPhone.. it's an incompatibility with the implementation of the charging system.. for example I have a ubioLabs wireless charger and it stops working with the iPhone 12 after a few seconds.. a flashing amber light starts blinking. It only takes a quick read of the user manual to see what's up..

A blinking amber LED indicates a foreign object has

been detected (metal objects like keys, coins, magnets,

The new iPhone 12 uses the new magnasafe technology - IOW there's a magnet in the back of the phone - this is the same issue that has made the news lately because Pacemaker owners are being warned about carrying their iPhone 12 anywhere near their chest in the event it triggers the magnet sensor in the Pacemaker.. Apple has released a support document on this:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211900

tl;dr - Your wireless charger isn't compatible with the iPhone 12. You'll need to find a charger that is.

I’ve been irate about this too and finally got my phone to respond to other chargers.

Maybe this will work for users who tried turning off Optimized Charging only to see it not work. I was in this camp and have tried lots of variations to check for a result only to find something DID work for me.

I had to do a firm restart after turning off Optimized Battery Charging. Apparently the phone remembers something for many users after turning the feature off. It seems I had to clear my cache to get the phone to respond correctly.

Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Charging <OFF>

Quickly press and release:

Up Volume

Down Volume

press and hold the sleep wake button until the phone shuts down completely

I suggest doing a soft restart as well.

We have a 12 and a 12 Pro Max.

Dogcow is right however. With MagSafe the placement of the charging coil in the phones moved. This presents an issue for many older chargers, many of which are single coil chargers. A flat charging plate will let you place the phone in the exact right spot to align the coil in the phone with the coil in the charger. Or get a newer charger with at least dual coil and make sure the manufacturer specifically suggests it works with iPhone 12 series phones.

What models, and are they listed as compatible with the iPhone 12?

I had a Belkin sold at the Apple Store, but Belkin stated it was not compatible with the 12 family, only the iPhone 11 family and before.

Note it would usually work, but not always and was finicky about it, and that’s why they rated it “not compatible.”

The fact that it works for some or “sometimes” does not mean it’s compatible; Belkin is releasing a new, visually identical model that is compatible with the iPhone 12 family.

You say that and yet I haven't plugged my device in to charge in my home in months - all of the chargers I use outside of my car are either vanilla Qi or MagSafe and my phone charges fully all the time without drama now that I know which chargers work and which will not by direct admission of their vendor (Belkin, in my case, which lists both of the chargers that do not work as compatible with only models through the iPhone 11 family but will be coming out with new chargers that are iPhone 12 compatible.)

As mentioned before, I have a Mophie Qi puck I bought to use with my iPhone X that charges my iPhone 12 Pro Max with no issues whatsoever.

Saying that Samsung has made changes that effected their wireless charging compatibility is simply not true....I have a NOTE 5G and another Samsung S20 in the family and neither phone has a problem at different voltage on different 3rd party chargers.....

There are myriad posts on various Samsung forums about issues S21 owners are having with their phones and wireless charging using third-party Qi chargers that worked fine with their older devices; things work as expected with Samsung wireless chargers.

There are some wireless coil issues on stand chargers, and thats why many of those manufacturers (Belkin is one) specifically state their older stand chargers are not compatible with the iPhone 12 family. just as Logitech's wireless stand charger that worked fine with the X, Xs and XR did not work with the iPhone 11.

Native Union has a nice FAQ about charging and coil alignment that is not iPhone-specific:

Native Union: My wireless charger is not charging my device. What should I do?

It is compatible with Qi chargers, the problem is the accessory makers have gone beyond that.

For example, I have four year-old Qi chargers that work perfectly with the 12 Pro Max because they are “puck” chargers and don’t make assumptions as to where the coil is.

I also have Belkin stands that do not because they did make erroneous assumptions - as shown by the fact Belkin discontinued them and made new models that are.

Same issue here. I set my iPhone 12 Pro on a wireless charger every night, and 9 times out of 10 I have to restart to get it to charge. I finally bought the MagSafe charger thinking the issue may be the third party charger. But, to my surprise, the exact same thing happens with the MagSafe.

Interesting observation. If my phone doesn't start charging when I set it on my wireless charger, I'll shut it down while still positioned on the charger. (I don't pick it up) Something about the wireless charger causes it then to auto restart without me having to hold down the power button. And after it's booted up, it's successfully charging. On the same spot.

Agreed, but I have yet to see many specific case & charger combinations that resolve this issue (until Apple resolves it with iOS). I have posted what is working for me ( CHOETECH Wireless Charger 10W with TORRAS Shockproof iPhone 12 Case, but I am not happy with the case. The Otterbox defender for iPhone 12 is what I prefer, but does not seem compatible with any wireless charger with iPhone 12 Pro. I don't see many posts specifying what case they use when it works or not, so it's not much help until they do.
