iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

I love it when someone who recently joined the forum with 4 points, tells someone who has been on the forum for over a decade and knows the forum managers personally, what Apple does or doesn't do here.

You are wrong. The people you hope are reading your posts are NOT here. If you want to tell Apple your thoughts where it will be heard you should do one or more of the following:

  1. Provide feedback via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Call Apple
  3. Use the Contact Support button at the top of this page
  4. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show them the issue you're having

Otherwise, it is you who is wrong about Apple paying attention here.

That is inaccurate.

iPhone 12 models will only charge wirelessly at up to 15w by using a MagSafe charger and then only if connected to a USB-PD 3.0 compliant power supply.

Otherwise they will drop back to charging wirelessly at 7.5w, but they WILL charge at that lower power.

Sadly the guy in the Apple store said “if it’s a few hundred that’s not a lot when we sold 21 million phones” and “engineers only work on issues based on impact” so I hope everyone is reporting in these forums.

However, don’t post here about it as we are just fellow Apple users.

Instead, contact Apple Support directly:

Just got my 12 mini yesterday and I am having the same issue with Qi charging. I have been using the Mophie 3-in-1 with my XS no problem. But for some reason my 12 mini won’t charge (OS 14.2 and restarted device numerous times). Below is the Mophie charger I’m using.

Anyone who’s using the same charger and facing the same issue with their 12s (with OS 14.2)? I am contemplating if I should do an device exchange.

Start here:

I contacted Apple about this over a week ago. In my case, sometimes my phone stops charging wirelessly, but it starts working again if I restart the device.

I had to wait on the phone for a long time while they transferred me to an engineer. Apple is aware of this issue and they are troubleshooting it. Giving you a new phone my not help, if the next phone you get has the same problem. Apple ran some diagnostics on my phone, and later, when my phone stopped working again, I was able to call them up, reference my open case, and they ran diagnostics again. The iPhone is one of the most advanced, and complex, consumer products in the world. Sometime things don't work as designed. Hopefully they'll work this out soon, but fortunately, we can still charge our phones will cables, so only a minor inconvenience; not a very serious flaw.

You can contact Apple support yourself. This is a community site, so we can't speak for Apple. We're just other customers like you.

Same problem - even bought a new charger. When that didn't work, I came to the forums (should've come here first I guess, whoops) .. brand new 12 pro

Just turned phone off and restarted and is now working.

Anybody from Apple out there listening???

Not here. This is strictly user to user, and Apple doesn't participate on this forum. You can provide feedback to Apple via this link, which will be read --> https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

It cannot be that a company like Apple which highly values customer satisfaction and customer feedback is not monitoring this forum. One of the main reasons a company creates a user forum is to garner customer feedback.

You can believe what you like, but those of us who have been here for decades know people at Apple, have spoken to them frequently and know precisely what their policies and procedures are.

They do not read this forum to glean that information.

It's not dangerous; your phone would shut itself off long before it became hot enough to do damage.

If you would like to complain to Apple, they do not read these forums so you need to make your unhappiness known here:

They "will not help" you because they can't do anything about your third party device, particularly if it's not acting as it should.

Apple knows about their phones, they know about their chargers.

That doesn't mean that their phones only work with their chargers, but they don't have one of every third party Qi charger ever made on-hand to be able to help you with your issue.

If you are concerned that it is a phone issue, contact Apple Support directly and arrange to have your phone checked either by techs at an Apple Store if they are open near you, a third party Apple Authorized Service Provider, or arrange for your phone to be sent in and checked.

It will depend on the model of wireless charging base you have, however this is NOT the iPhone.. it's an incompatibility with the implementation of the charging system.. for example I have a ubioLabs wireless charger and it stops working with the iPhone 12 after a few seconds.. a flashing amber light starts blinking. It only takes a quick read of the user manual to see what's up..

A blinking amber LED indicates a foreign object has

been detected (metal objects like keys, coins, magnets,

The new iPhone 12 uses the new magnasafe technology - IOW there's a magnet in the back of the phone - this is the same issue that has made the news lately because Pacemaker owners are being warned about carrying their iPhone 12 anywhere near their chest in the event it triggers the magnet sensor in the Pacemaker.. Apple has released a support document on this:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211900

tl;dr - Your wireless charger isn't compatible with the iPhone 12. You'll need to find a charger that is.

Among other things, none of Apple's phones ever were banned from airplanes for bursting into flame… but that's another story.

No one ever said Apple was on the bleeding edge of technology, but when they do adopt a technology they tend to do it right, and of course at least here most feel iOS is light years ahead of Android in terms of usability and functionality; people on the Samsung message boards would, of course, feel differently.

None of this changes that working with Apple Support directly is the best way to arrive at a solution, either by figuring out what's different about your phone or providing them with the information needed to address any software issues involved.
